Angry Venting on my Thyroid Biopsy

I just had a thyroid biopsy on Tuesday. Oh My Gosh did it hurt! Did anyone ever have one? The doctor thinks the result was inconclusive since the nodule they were going for was far down and hard to reach. The got it once but when they tried again, they couldn't reach it and ended up just hurting me for about half an hour. I'm so bruised and sore. I think all that poking around really irritated my thyroid because I feel so much more horrible then before I went in! My doctor said that if they couldn' biopsy it, she would suggest a surgeon do it and have me knocked out! I think I would have preferred that to being fully awake and feeling every single needle prick! The Lidicain they injected did nothing but burn and make the top of my skin a little numb. I'm glad it's over, but I will most certainly never do that again!!!!
Oh what we go through to get a diagnosis so we can feel normal again!!!!!

Default Sorry!

I'm sorry you had to go through that, I remember how difficult & painful it was. I had SIX nodules Biopsied - 3 on each side. I was told it would not hurt & that the Lidocaine would numb area - NOPE, it didn't! Just stung like a bee & the jerk didn't even give it time to numb the area he went in immediatly after nurse shot me up w/Lidocaine!! Each time it hurt so bad, it felt like someone was stabbing me in the neck & hurt even worse afterwards and for the next 3 days my neck was sore, cramping, & I would get this occasional stabbing pain, he said the pain in my thyroid after the biopsy had nothing to do with it?????? I no longer see him, he was an idiot, could barely speak English, laughed at me when I told him of the constant ache in my ovaries & asked me how the heck did I know where my ovaries were, could I have PCOS I asked - he said I don't know nothing about no ovaries - see someone else & I surely did!! Gee, I thought an ENDOCRINOLOGIST would know a little something about ovaries since they are part of the ENDOCRINE system!!!! Sounds like you had the idiot that was trying to draw my blood one am doing your biopsy - sorry. This girl couldn't find a vein, must've been a newbie cause I've never had that problem before with all the bloodwork I've had done, and she was just digging around! Go ahead & vent as much as you need to!! I know how frustrated you must feel & how difficult it is to find someone who can give you the care you need - I have heard some nightmare stories about women & their endos - it seems to me(from my experience) that their main area of study/big $$ maker is with diabetes patients - which is why I go to a Reproductive Endo and an Internist to monitor/handle all my issues combined. Best wishes to you as you go through all this. And again, please feel free to vent to me anytime you want!!!

Yes, fine needle aspirations can hurt! I am surprsied they didn't tell you to put ice on it when you got home, that should have helped with the pain and the brusing. I've had several FNAs in my time...but after my 2nd surgery I didn't need the litocain (my entire neck is numb from the type of surgery I had). Good luck and keep us posted on your next step!
