Angry Very frustrated!!

I just need to vent and maybe get some feedback on this I am seeing a new Gyno, and although I’ve had two ultrasounds already, along with three different doctors saying I have PCOS he wants another sonogram. I am really tired of being tested and getting nowhere with treatment. The first sonogram I had done, they said showed a string of pearls, typical of PCOS She put me on a BCP and it made me bleed a lot and anxiety drove me crazy. Finally I stopped it. I've tried BCPs three times and this always happens. SO anyway, I did not like this doctor because of several reasons, which I won't go into. So I went to another state to see someone who was supposed to be an expert in PCOS. He also took a sonogram. He said he did not see the string of pearls, but he saw something else that showed PCOS, I don't remember what, cysts maybe? Also I had a lot of other things that indicated PCOS so he agreed with the diagnosis. However he would not treat me since he did all of his testing in his lab and my insurance wouldn't pay for it. So I saw an endo. He looked at all the info, and my appearance and agreed with he diagnosis. Unfortunately he wanted another test before treating me, and I have to wait two months before another appointment!
So here I am again at another doc, again waiting for yet another sonogram. I’m afraid this one will be different again. I mean does this make sence? First the string of pearls, then no string of pearls, but something else. The first sonogram showed both ovaries enlarged. Then when I went to the ER one night with stabbing pain in my right side they found nothing wrong in the x-ray except an enlarged right ovary. Is it possible that different sonograms and tests at different times, show different things?
I am so frustrated with this. They said I had PCOS months ago and so far I’ve had no help with treating it. The second doc even said I should be on Metformin, especially if the BCP's weren't agreeing with me, but then again he won't treat me.

Im so sorry you are having to go through all this with these different doctors. I hate when they want to use you as a pin cushion and just keep testing you over and over.

I have never had a sonogram so i really cant help you. The only time I have had an U/S is when I was getting ready for my IUI.

Sorry I cant be of more help.

I don't think a sonogram or ultrasound is the only way to diagnose PCOS. You can diagnose PCO with it, but not the syndrome. How they do that is hormonal blood tests, and possibly a glucose test. I'm surprised the RE didn't order any of those, that doesn't make sense...

Just a note for you - - If they don't do the ultrasound/sonogram at the correct time of the month (3 days into your period) They will not get a true reading of whats going on. It was explained to me that because your body is hormonally at peace 3 days in, they can see alot better of what is TRUELY going on.

thank you for this. I have heard so many times that certain tests have to be done at certain times,or in certain ways, but none of the doctors i've seen pays any attention to that. is there anywhere that you know on the web that states this? say maybe a medical site? it would help me to have something like that to back it up, if i mention this to the new gyno.thanks agian

Actually it wasn't an RE just an Endo. He did order the testosterone and fsh/lh ratio, and said it seems to be consistant with PCOS, only thing is i was supposed to see him in three months..in the meantime he wanted a GTT. BUt now after almost 3 months they called up and cancelled my appointment, because he'll be out of town. So now my appointment is at the end of August!!! this is why i went to another gyno. It was much easier to get in to see him. the fact that the sonogram is not the only way to be diagnosed and i've already gotten three docs to agree i have it , is just another part of the frustration, that this doc wants to do another sonogram. thanks for your thoughts.

thanks for your thoughts. i do feel like the human pin cushion. i wouldn't mind if they would actually do something!i mean the last testing i had done was very recent, but yet he's got to do his testing. And what if i get different results..(which i'm finding it is not unlikely if i have it done at a different time of the month). Does that mean that those very recent tests mean nothing?! As far as i'm concerend no. So now i'm hoping his results will match with the others, so i don't have another battle on my hands. Did i mention I hate doctors!!!! ( no, i know there are some good ones out there..i just wish i knew where they were hiding them.

Have you done the third ultrasound yet?

Because personally I would stick it out and wait for the endocrinologist to come back. In the scheme of things it's not so long, and unless the gyno is really experienced with PCOS it will be a waste of time and money. There are boards around here that tell you what tests you should be having -- hormones including LH and the different forms of testosterone, GTT, and thyroid tests too.

Usually the diagnosis is based on your hormone levels, physical signs (overweight, hirsute, baldness, skin tags) and scans. If you've had two scans that show something's wrong in your ovaries that should be enough.

The endo can't give you met until your hormone results come back. That's fair and reasonable. If you don't like this gyno, don't see him. I don't recommend doctor shopping unless there's a very good reason for it.

Just my two cents...

Thanks for the reply. I actually am still waiting for the Endo appointment. But I did have to find a new Gyno anyway. The Endo says I probably have endometriosis also which he doesn't do.
My last one was just, well, irresponsible. She took a sample of the uterine wall tissue and it was unable to be tested because of an insufficient sample. So she says it must be okay because, she couldn't get a larger sample?? The thing is as far as I’m concerned I never had the test done, so how can she say it's okay? Plus I know someone else who saw the same doctor, and she let things go on several tests, so she switched.
So anyway, I’m looking for a new Gyno and I don’t think this doctor is for me either. He is always rushing me, and he's already got an idea in his head that I’m depressed because I take an antidepressant, so that's my problem. Example: I have a circulatory problem in my legs. (P.O.T.S.)When he came into the office my feet had turned blue and numb so I was rubbing them. This happens sometimes. He asked what was wrong, and I told him. He goes oh; that's just nerves....nerves?! My therapist had a good laugh at that one. Five minutes before that he told me how relaxed I was when he took the exam, because I complained it was painful. He never asked me about any health issues that I might have. Just rushed me out of the office. I really do hate to go doctor hopping but I’d like to have some faith in my next Gyno. I do agree that if a Gyno isn't really experienced with pcos they are not much help.
Now I still have to wait two months for this Endo.. Not as bad if you didn't already wait three months! But what can I do. I have called him several times because he told me if I needed to talk to him before the first three months, to call. Four times.. Never got a response. Long story short (impossible at this point I know), I’m just very frustrated in general with the lack of attention that a lot of doctors give their patients. Of course the fact that I’m a Medicaid patient on an HMO probably factors into that. But I’ve heard a lot of people complain that are on other plans. I really think that the doctors I’m seeing are overworked. I got an early morning appointment once and the treatment was so much better, because it was before everything gets backed up. I’m now trying to book morning appointments. But you can't always get them. Unless you want to wait for a few months of course! Sorry for the rant. Once I start it’s hard to stop.
