Please give me some ideas? I am sooooo CONFUSED!!!!!
A doctor's appointment does not sound like a bad idea. Blood tests can tell you if you are symptomatic for PCOS. Hirutism is just one symptom, so it doesn't mean a sure diagnosis. However, if you do have a hormonal inbalance, hair growth can be slowed by medications such as spironolactone. Other treatment options include permanant hair removal techniques such as lasering. But if the hair growth is due to hormones, you'll want to get them under control before trying these.
Just because you are symptomatic for (or diagnosed with) PCOS does not mean you will gain weight. The underlying cause there is insulin resistance, and you may or may not have it. Some women with PCOS are thin and don't gain weight. For each woman this syndrome is different.
Hugs honey. I know how you feel. I don't have any answers because I have all the same problems, but I just want to give you a hug and let you know you're not alone.
On hon, sorry you're going through this right now. I agree with LadyDionysus, a doctor would probably be a good idea. You would want your hormones checked. There are options depending on results. Are you on any meds right now, bcp? There is no rule that says if you have pcos you will gain weight. Just the same as this syndrome is named after cystic ovaries, not every woman w/ pcos has cysts. I've struggled with my weight since early childhood. I was able to slim down by late teens. I did gain a lot about 21, but I suspect that was b/c I had to get off bcp. Once I got back on 2years later, I lost almost everything I gained. Every woman is different though. It all depends on your body's makeup. There are options out there for the excess hair as well. I do not have this issue as bad as others, but my doc put me on Met to help with what I do have. I know this can be scary and depressing at times...but you're not alone. There is a lot of information here and a lot of people to talk to. PM me if you'd like.

Can't wait to start WW again and loose the other 15lbs I gained with the last pregnancy and the 30lbs I still needed to lose with the first one.

hi hun. I started getting symptoms when I was 14. I started getting hairs on my chin and I was too embarassed to tell anyone, even my parents. I was very self conscious about it. I know it's a tough thing to deal with, especially when it's new. I would definitely go and see your doc and take things from there. A lot of women with PCOS are overweight, but there are also quite a bit that are not. being insulin resistant is what causes the weight gain. What I would recommend to you is if you are afraid of gaining weight, is to start eating the right way now, before it possibly does get too late. women who are IR (Insulin Resistant) do not digest carbs and sugars properly. In a typical woman (without IR) the carbs are used for energy. however, women like me, with IR, once a food with carbs is consumed, it is instantly stored into fat. Which is why we get the pregnant looking bellies. But go to a doc, have them test you for it. An endo would be the best to see. and he can run some tests to look at your hormone levels and help you take things from there. in the meanwhile, there are things youcan do about hair (wax, bleach, creams, tweeze, etc) and also, don't forget that we are here if you have any questions.

talk to your mom about having laser treatment. It stays away alot longer, it is not permanent, but you can go months hair free. It can get quite expensive, i pay about 150 dollars every 4 months or so, but it works the best. Shaving seems to make it grow thicker for me, tweezing is best, but if there is too much hair, this is very painful and time consuming.
((((hugs))))
Go to the doctor!

Heidi Diagnosed September 2005 Age 26 Initial Symptoms: Irregular cycles, hirutism, weight gain, depression, panic attacks. Meds: Glucophage 750mg x 3, b-complex w/ex folic acid Weight loss: 40lbs in first year Diet: Low carb/High Protein, whey protein shakes Since prego: prenatals with 1mg of folic acid, still continuing with high dose of glucophage, colace, 6 ultrasounds that look good so far.
You realllllllllly need to see a doctor about this. Your GYN can run blood tests on you to confirm if your hair growth is a result of PCOS. If you do have PCOS, he may prescribe Aldactone, which helps a lot with new hairs not coming. But it's best to start it earlier rather than later (that is, if you have PCOS--your doctor has to make that call) So don't be afraid....call your doc, ASAP!!
.ever since i was 15 i had started to grow a moustache and got hairs above my belly button i started to shave these
You're not alone -- lots of us had our moustaches starting to grow in our teens -- mine started growing in earnest when I turned 14 and at 15 I was shaving every day. I'd a far heavier moustache than most of the boys my age.

It's pretty common for the genital hair to go all the way back

I don't have it there, but it's very common

It's one of the main areas susceptible to male-type hair growth.

Don't let it ruin your life.

Personally I think that too much makeup gives the game away worse than the hair itself.

The pot belly (apple shape) tends to go with PCOS. PCOS women, like men, tend to put weight on aroud the waist rather than the way most women put it on around the hips.

You won't necessarily get fat at all.

Don't jump to the conclusion that it's PCOS -- it might not be.

Life is confusing. But let's take it in a sensible way.
1. You say your mother has a moustache. Is it heavy enough for her to remove it? How often? Is it a "shave every day" type moustache or a "cream every couple of months" moustache? This is important because it may be an indicator of why you have one.
2. You say your younger sisters both have moustaches -- again, remember that most women remove some facial hair at least once a month, so are they "shave every day" type moustaches or "cream every couple of months" moustaches? In other words, boyish moustaches or girlish hair on the upper lip?
3. Your general description is of someone whose body responds very readily to testosterone. Are your ring fingers longer than your index fingers? (That's one obvious indicator of testosterone sensitivity).
4. Your body seems to be responding to a hormonal balance of free testosterone to estrogen which is heavily testosterone loaded. Moustache, general body hair, slight pot belly, beard growth. In other words, the same sort of development that a boy has, though a little later in time.
5. There are other indicators that a doctor would probably look at
* extent of breast development -- testosterone tends to cause restricted breast development
* the regularity and frequency of your periods -- testosterone tends to cause them to be less regular and further apart
* (less commonly) voice -- testosterone tends to cause the voice to deepen
* (less commonly) clitoris -- testosterone tends to cause the clitoris to enlarge
6. Even if your hormonal balance is one in which there are high levels of free testosterone and/or low levels of estrogen, it's not necessarily PCOS that's the cause. PCOS is a complex of symptoms which can be caused by other things.
7. Sure, there are treatments available for your symptoms -- but the question is sometimes one of whether the cure is worse than the disease.
Speaking personally, as a teenager I had more of a moustache and hairier legs than any of the boys my age. And I had large nipples but no breasts. I thought it was the end of the world, but then my (now) husband met me for the first time one night when I wasn't wearing a bra and hadn't shaved for 24 hours and had very obvious stubble on my upper lip. He says he was very glad to see the coarse stubble there because (1) it showed him that I couldn't be as young as my figure (or lack of it) made me look and (2) hairy girls are more romantic. The rest is history. And we have a family, so it hasn't stopped me having children.
i feel for you. i have hair in all the same spots as u. sometimes i do not feel like a woman. there are ways to hide your imperfections, i guess. wax and bleach. maybe some electrolysis but it hurts and is expensive. shaving should be your last resort, in my opinion. definately go to a endocrinologist!!!!!!! laser did not work for me-fyi
if you can get your face waxed. you can do it at home with sally hansen wax strips(it says to rub in between palms to get it heated but try a hairdryer instead) or use a microwave wax kit. For those of youwho can afford it... go to a professional waxer in a salon. they deal with a lot more often than you think.
Waxing lasts longer and the hairs grow back fine. trust me i have been doing this since age 17. iused to have a man's beard but now it is better.
for those of you who live in nj; i promise you skin care by Hoda in Verona, nj deals with clients with hormonal disorders almost exclusively.
Also, bleach facial hair in between waxing. remember i am only trying to help.
