Unhappy very sad

Hello everyone

I'm sorry to re-introduce myself on such a negative, self-pitying note.

I visited these boards a few months ago when I was told I had possible PCOS. It was confirmed that I do have MILD pcos. The gynecologist referred me to an Endocrinologist becuase I also have CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/M.E.) which means I also have a range of other symptoms other than PCOS like nightsweatch (for 10 years), fevers, swollen glands and chronic sore throats, twitching, muscle pain, etc.etc.

Anyway, the Endo. this morning said he also thinks I have diabetes now.

I am having a hard time coping right now.

The CFS is very hard to live with and has taken away a lot from my life, then miscarriages, infertility and now this. Also its a catch 22 because of the CFS I cannot exercise to any great degree (beyond light yoga). So, consequently I've gained A LOT of weight. Now I'm about 170lbs YIKES. I used to be 112 lbs.... I seem to gain just walking past food these days. I know carbs are bad but I also crave them like crazy.

I am now worried a bit the endo will recommend a high-carb, low-fat diet which in my experience does me NO GOOD. I prefer low-carb, but even on low carb I don't seem to lose anymore, but at least don't gain on it.

He did mention possible metformin, is anyone on that, and what about side-effects.

Any comments, tips, your experiences are appreciated.

Hello Matisse:
I am sorry to hear about your new diagnosis. CFS is something I considered for myself before discovering I had PCOS because a lot of the symptoms are the same.

As for the metformin, I have been on in it since March 2000, and out of all the meds for diabetes, it actually does aid in weight loss. I originally lost 57 pounds in a years time on it. Of course you have to be on a dietary restriction either low carb or the diabetic diet. I can't understand why your dr would want you on a high carb diet.

The fun side effects of Met are diarrhea and upset stomach, nausea, a bad taste in your mouth, lack of appetite, and often fatigue. But these side efffects tend to go away after 3-6 months of taking the medicine depending upon how many milligrams a day you are on. (I am on 1500mg/day)

If he does put you on met, make sure he prescribes the glucaphage XR. These are extended versions of the pill. You take them all at once, one time a day and it slowly releases into your system so the side effects are drastically limited.

Try not to let things bring you down. I know easier said than done. I have a friend who has CFS and she seems to have bounced back quite nicely and is leading a very productive life.

I know how you feel. I have CFS, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and PCOS with diabetes! I can relate to everything you are going thru! I also gained alot of weight in a short period of time. You are going to have to accept your situation & try to put mind over matter so you can be happy. I know how hard it is because I live with tremendous pain every day of my life. Also, after 3 years of heartache & 1 pregnancy loss I am finally pregnant. My diabetes has gotten very bad & despite insulin injections, my baby's umbilical cord is shrinking & she is in danger of dying. My Dr will take her out very soon to avoid that - but her lungs are not ready. Anyway - you will not be put on a high carb diet if you have diabetes because it would be very bad for you. A good rule of thumb is to eat only complex carbs & never eat them alone. Always eat them along with protein. IE. grahm crackers & milk or cheese & crackers. Peanut butter toast is better for breakfast than cereal. I would recommend a good dietician & I'll bet your Dr will send you to one anyway. I also crave a lot of carbs & candy, but I know I can only have them in moderation - especially the sweets. Well I have to go for now - I am on total bedrest for my baby's cord problem, but just know that you are not alone & you REALLY CAN BE HAPPY. It just takes a lot of "mental work" for people like us. Happiness is a state of mind I always say. Post if you have any more questions. Oh, I am also on Metformin/Glucophage & one side effect is weight loss - not bad eh? Take care......
