Beans are a slow carb and great for weight loss. I make a batch once a week and they greatly reduce my hunger. Google slow carbs and those are the ones you want to focus on. I make my beans in a crockpot...add smoked turkey and you've got a meal.
Happy to hear that you are getting your blood sugars under control. Another good antioxidant is green tea....it helps speed up the metabolism...drink it three times a day without sugar if possible...organic.
