Default Vitamin D deficiency, please help need info

Has anyone been diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency and if so how much Vitamin D did your doctor tell you to take. I think my doctor is nuts and possibly dangerous. Any help with this would be great.

Thank you

Our bodies are designed to synthesize their own vitamin D with sun exposure. If you are fair-skinned, I have read that 20 minutes several times a week will give you adequate vitamin D. If you have dark skin, you need more exposure. No sunscreen either for those short periods of sun exposure.

We are not designed to get much vitamin D from eating, so I would skip the supplements if I were you and just get more exposure to sun.

Ammarah,

LOL with the oxy clean comment. I have been there, only the stuff never worked. At least you have your sense of humor!

I too, have read articles relating PCOS to Vit. D deficiency. It would be wise to supplement with it during winter months where there is little sun exposure, and then taking it in sensible amounts during spring summer and early fall.

I think your doctor is wise for looking into the whole picture. Most docs are not even aware of the Vit D connection.

Thanks for that article, this is a quote from it "In my experience and that of other researchers, high, infrequent dosing can lead to problems. In one recent study, blood levels rose from low to extremely high, (more than 300 nmol/l) 2 to 4 hours after a 50,000 IU oral dose,65 and then slowly returned to pretreatment suboptimal levels. Clearly this must disrupt normal feedback mechanisms in D and calcium regulation"

This is exactly what my doctor wants me to do.

LOL, I was surprised when I first read about it too.

I live in Minnesota, so I don't get alot of sun in the winter time. I think I would take a much smaller dose in the summer time though. Just to be on the safe side.

Smile I take RX Vitamin D- (50,000 IU oral dose)

My Endocrinologist has always tested my Vitamin D, along with a lot of other PCOS related tests. She has even ran three different types of Vitamin D tests. (Once)
I did have low Vitamin D. I have been taking a 50,000 IU, green gel capsule, once a week for the past two years. My levels are always normal now. I couldn't believe that I needed to supplement it, I live in Sunny So. Cal. I am happy that I finally have a doctor who really looks out for me

My doctor just told me yesterday I am deficient in vit. D. SHe wants me to take 2000 ui/ daily. I will be going out into the sun more often. I usually try to avoid the sun because one I don't like heat, two I'm brownskinned and three because of this stupid acne and hair problem.

Allison does the Vitamin D make you feel better and if so in what ways?

Monifa, Everything that I have read indicates that your dosing is safer and makes more sense how have you felt differently since taking the Vitamin D?

Well I just started yesterday so I'm not feeling the affects yet. I wonder if being deficient in vit. D makes you tired or fatigued because I sure am. Does anyone know?

I am vitamin D deficient and am taking supplements: 1000 daily vitamin plus 3/week prescribed dose for 3 months. I don't get out in the sun much as I have other medications that I take that say to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and I also cannot stand hot weather and sitting/standing in direct sun gives me migraines. I've been taking the supplements for almost 3 months now but have not noticed any changes in how I feel.

I take 2,000 a day too. Honestly it's hard if you live up north(I live in North Dakota) to get the right amount of sun..My vitamin D was about 1 point above severe deficiency...So far I've been feeling so much better taking them...

Amazingly enough they are starting to look at how fast the Vitamin D migrates to the blood. Scientists are saying it can take up to 2 days to enter the blood stream and if you scrub your skin with soap it can emusify some of the oils and remove them. Also sunscreen greater then 8 can block 95% of the UVB light you need to convert cholesterol to vitamin D. So they have been finding that even people in the tropics can be deficient! Oh and you are lucky I had to convince my MD to give me the test and she was shocked that I had a level of 15.

Yes, fatigue can be a deficiency symptom. Though this is typically a silent deficiency. Often people don't know until they have osteomalacia (adult rickets)
