Thumbs up Vitamin D- "The Missing Link"

Hi Cysters,
I receive a newsletter every month dedicated to natural solutions to PCOS. I thought this was interesting. http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/news41.html#sec1. This site also has a lot of very valuable information for controlling PCOS naturally.

Wow!!! I had seen something about vitamin D on The Today Show one morning. They said that the current RDA is way too low, but they didn't mention all those benefits!! Very interesting. I'm definitely gonna have to start loading up on vitamin D.

If you all start taking Vitamin D, please make sure that it's the D3, NOT D2.

My endo just tested my vitamin D and I came up slightly to moderately deficient. I consume some fortified dairy products as well as over 1000 ius of Vitamin D in a day through supplements, so I did a little research. Obese people tend toward lower Vitamin D because it's a fat-soluble vitamin and it's "hoarded" in our fat. Also, I dress very conservatively so I'm not getting a ton of D from the sun.

I am working to increase my vitamin D and I'm going to switch from supplementary fish oil to cod liver oil, which contains natural vitamin D, since it's obvious that the synthetic stuff isn't having much impact on me right now!

I wish I would have joined this site first. I paid $16 for that book! Oh well! Also, is is cod liver oil just as good for you as omega 3 fish oil? I hate the after-taste of the fish oil and I could be getting some vitamin D.

That's a bummer

Re: Fish Oil

Run a search in this forum, and in the DEPRESSION FORUM on the phrase:

fish oil*

Be sure to put the "*" after the word oil beause it's only 3 letters.

I take Carlson's lemon flavored fish oil, with no problems.

From what I'm reading, CLO is better for you than fish oil for a few reasons. I'm getting some info at Mothering.com's Traditional Foods forum. I'm not sure CLO tastes too delicious but if you can handle fish oil, it's probably not worse. Some CLO has higher levels of EPA and DHA than regular fish oil, so it may be better.

A poster at Mothering suggested I check out Chris Masterjohn's articles on why CLO is better than straight fish oil, at the Weston A Price Foundation website. I haven't yet, but maybe you want to check them out...I'll post links when I find relavent articles!

Aren't there 'better times of the year' to take Cod Liver Oil? I seem to recall that it might be better to take in the winter months...or maybe it was summer?

Something to do with vitamin overload (or something like that)

http://www.vitamindcouncil.com/ <---- All you need to know about vitamin D. It's a great link.

Also, cod liver oil is a great way to get Vitamin D and A; I take 2 tablespoons a day. My nightblindness in driving is virtually gone. CLO also has omega-3's, so you probably don't have to supplement with regular fish oil.

Yes, Kat, some do recommend taking CLO during winter months and fish oil in summer months so you don't get too much vitamin D. However, I'm correcting a deficiency (my endo checked my vit D level and it's too low) so I'm taking CLO instead of FO until I'm back to normal. If the CLO contains natural vitamin D, not synthetic, it's supposed to be less likely you'll get too much, although it's good to do some research on the subject.

I have pale skin so in theory, I should absorb a lot of vitamin D from minimal sunlight, but there's a link between obesity and vit D deficiency (it's fat-soluble and stored in fat, so it's not as available in the body.)

I'm not sure if there is an RDA for vit D, but as Becky said, the recommended amount is too low and many health care pros recommend higher amounts.

Keep in mind that your body produces it's own Vit-D in the presence of sunshine, so get rid of those toxic sunscreens, and expose your skin to more sunshine. Just not too much, you don't want to burn, of course.

Default Hm.

I think this is interesting - I wonder if Vitamin D deficiency could be the culprit behind my yearly winter depression tendencies (SADD). I know vitamin d is supposed to help that, makes me wonder if PCOS might make you more susceptible to SADD.

What's the difference between vitamin d2 and d3?
