Default Vitamin D Questions?!!

Hi again Ladies!

Again, i have been reading some articles on the net, and here on soulcysters, about the link that pcosers, may be vitamin d deficient!

now, i went to one GP, at my surgery, and asked, if i could be tested, to see if i have low vit d.......she said....why?..i have never tested anyone for that!..i told her about these new studies!...ans she replied, that she reads, all her medical journals, and updates, and she has not come across this news!

Can i buy this Vitamin d, over the counter, or does it have to be prescibed???

what dose should be taken??

what benfits, have you seen, since taking Vtamin d?
do you take any other supplements, with vit d?

thanks again in advance!
Gina

Just reading about vitamin d and found this:

Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 typically have a low plasma concentration of 25(OH)D [47]; this level decreases as obesity and body fat increase [48]. Obesity does not affect skin's capacity to synthesize vitamin D, but greater amounts of subcutaneous fat sequester more of the vitamin and alter its release into the circulation. Even with orally administered vitamin D, BMI is inversely correlated with peak serum concentrations, probably because some vitamin D is sequestered in the larger pools of body fat [47].

and also this:

A growing body of research suggests that vitamin D might play some role in the prevention and treatment of type 1 [65] and type 2 diabetes [66], hypertension [67], glucose intolerance [68], multiple sclerosis [69], and other medical conditions [70-71]. However, most evidence for these roles comes from in vitro, animal, and epidemiological studies, not the randomized clinical trials considered to be more definitive. Until such trials are conducted, the implications of the available evidence for public health and patient care will be debated.

So it looks good, but weight is still an issue.

I have been taking Vit D (1,000 i.u) for months now and have noticed that I have only gotten sick once. (I usually get a cold every couple months). And in my profession I am exposed to a lot of germs and viruses. I recommend it if only just for that. I haven't noticed any change in my fertility though.

Thanks Kat.

I don't think that trying to have more vit D would hurt though, maybe the best way is the natural way: fatty fish, fish oils, fortified low fat milk...

the article I posted above, it suggests that 5-20 minutes twice a week are enough to fullfill your vitamin d requirements, so if you're up for it, it can't hurt.

For the last two years every year when my doc does the full screening, I have had very low vitamin D levels, she advised me to take vitamin D vitamins in the highest over the counter dosage possible. I have purchased vitamin D 5000 IU and I take them once a day. Have only been taking them for a week so far. I'm on so many other meds for cholesterol and blood pressure that if I do have reslts I won't know whether it's from the vitamins or a combination of other meds and diet. Will let you know if anything drastic occurs.

Between my multivitamin and my calcium/magnesium/D3 liquid supplement, I take 1100 IU of Vitamin D3 per day. MY OB/GYN told me that was probably not enough, then ordered a blood test to determine if I need to start taking more. He told me he takes 5000 IU per day!!

I take vitamin D that comes along with my calcium/magnesium supplement. Your body can NOT process calcium with out vitamin D, so it is already in most calcium supplements. So really I think all women should examine how much vitamin D they are taking, because it's really important to bone health, pcos or not.

I just went to consult with my naturopath after having my D3 levels measured. After about 6 months taking 5000IU's a day, I'm still at 22, much lower than "normal." She's upped the dosage to 20,000 IUs a day.
