personally I'd suggest starting out on a low dose. I started on 400 mg./day and did great. Then after 9 months of having it work really well, I had a hectic summer and went off it.(forgot is more like it) when I started back up in the fall I thought if 400 works well, 1200 must be even better.(typical stupid person, right?) I found it wasn't effective at all. i went off it. a couple of months later I realized the dosage was probably what messed it up and tried again, back on a low dose. Bang, worked like a charm, and I got pregnant! (woohoo) Unfortunately, it ended in an early m/c. I didn't think to go back on it until a few weeks ago. Sure enough, on a low dose, it seems to be great again.
If 400 doesn't work after two months, try increasing to 800 for two months. after that 1200 for two months. If it doesn't work by then, it likely wont, or if you are noticing side effects, (irratability or some of the stuff other cysters have mentioned) go off of it and don't take it anymore. Does that help any?

there is a post in this forum titled vitex links. It has a lot of information about vitex, but in short, it's an herb. I would suggest checking all the links in the post before getting too confused though. At first it seems like some of the information is conflicting, but a couple of links explain why that is.
