Question Vitex

I have been trying to concieve for a good year and I have had no success. I read that Vitex is good for restoring menstruation and balancing hormones. Has anyone ever tried it and if so did it work? Also, if you lack menstruation and it did in fact help with that, how long did it take? Please help me!!!!!

Hi Mija,

I did take vitex for a while and it didn't do anything for me (of course, neither did metformin, yet it seems to work magic with MANY other cysters). I am in an infertility support group where there is a cyster who tried for a year to get pregnant without success and then tried vitex and got pregnant three times! She lost two of the babies, but is well into her second trimester with the third. I know there are others who have had success with it, hopefully they will let you know how it went for them.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I hope it works for me. I too am taking metformin. The last couple of times I tried clomid I ended up with a lot of painful cysts and I figured I would try something else before I went back to that.

I have very good success with Vitex. I take it in tincture form. It takes a while to get in your system. So you have to be patient, and hang in there. But personally, it defiantly worked. I also take Don Quai along with it.

I know lots of cysters have had success with vitex but its not the only hormone balancer you can try. Donq Quai can be very good for cysters for example.

After a long time of having no periods I started taking agnus castus tablets and got a period after 3 months, the next after 2 months and then became pregnant!

So, it worked for me.

Vitex didn't work for me after taking it daily for over a year!!!

Beware though if you suffer mood swings / depression as a symptom of your pcos agnus castus vitex can make these symptoms worse. I would suggest Dong Quai instead as it doesn't have this effect.

I second the pms/depression mention. Vitex gave me back my periods but also gave me PMS for the first time ever.

I hadn't taken it in two years and I took it recently to bring on my last period. Well holy moly I was completely miserable for days, nonstop crying. In fact I spent two whole days just crying completely. It was definitely the worst PMS I ever had.

So its important to note this side effect.

Just a note about Vitex giving you PMS - that often happens as a side effect of your hormones rebalancing, so if it gives you PMS it's a good sign that it is rebalancing you! There are some other herbs - passionflower, st Johns wort etc which you can take while the PMS signs are around until your body restabilises and they go away.

It's not PMS i'm talking about, Vitex can actually make depression symptoms worse. I've suffered with PMS but also with depression and both are very different things. I know that vitex rebalances hormones BUT health professional (both medical and alternative) warned me that vitex can make depression symptoms worse and it was better to take dong quai as this rebalances hormones without making depression any worse

Wow - there you go. Didn't know that, which is interesting, seeing as I have had Vitex prescribed by my practisioner who knows I have depression. Thanks for letting us know. Still, personally, I found my depression did get worse for about a month or two (which was a very dangerous time), then it lightened off and has almost gone. Vitex isn't my only treatment though - I'm having hands on work done at the same time, so perhaps that is why they didn't warn me about the depression thing, because she is doing work to clear the depression. I also take dong quai at the same time, though I have been having problems with it over the past few months. I guess nothing is perfect and that is why IDEALLY it is great to have herbs prescribed personally for you by a practisioner (though as I well know that can get pretty pricey, though not as expensive as IVF...).
