Default Vitex, dong quai and side effects?

I just started taking Vitex (400mg's 3 times daily) and Dong Quai (500mg's 2 times daily). I've noticed about 10 minutes after taking them that my face felt hot and I felt dizzy and nauseous. This lasts about 3 hours and then goes away until I take the next pills. Has this happened to anyone else? Do these sound like normal side effects?

Default hmmmmm

Well, I have not had that reaction from taking vitex. But I drink it as a tea.

I DO know that a reaction like that can be sometimes called a "flushing" reaction when you take niacin or certain other kinds of herbs.

It also reminds me of an adrenaline swerve up or down with accompanying blood sugar rises and crashes.

I would start by taking only one at a time and seeing if it happens with both of them or just one.

If it happens with BOTH of them OR either one, then probably it's not about the specific items but a reaction your body is having to breaking down supplements. This sometimes is a side effect of insulin resistance. Also if you feel nauseous after taking vitamins.

I would be sure to take them with food as a place to start.

Once you've narrowed down whether it's one of them or both of them and are taking with food, then let us know if it's still bothering you and we'll brainstorm some more. =) We sisters are a team.

Good luck.

X - you're the best! Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them one at a time this evening to see which one I have an issue with. Do you think it could have anything to do with mixing them with metformin? I've been on met for 3 months now and although AF came, I haven't o'd and my cycles are on a standstill. That's why I thought I would try this...I will keep you posted!

Default vitex

I started taking vitex at the first of this month. I take 500mg twice a day. When I first took it, I noticed that I felt like I was having a hot flash. I just chalked up to maybe it was actually getting my hormones back in order. I also notice that I would feel nausea about 30 mins after I took it. I started taking it with food and no more nausea. I started it Aug 1 and still no AF. However, I feel tons better it seems like. so i'm just waiting to see what happens. Hope this could be of a little help. You are not the only one that has felt like that.

I started taking Vitex last week and have not noticed any hot flashes. Just putting in my 2 cents worth

Default Throwing in the towel

Thank you all for the advice and feedback! After giving it some thought (and not taking Vitex/Dong Quai last night and feeling like a million bucks), I've decided to stop taking them for a while. I just got over all the metformin side effects and don't have the energy right now to go through it all over again with the herbs. I will give the metformin a little longer to work on its own and then revisit my decision.

Thanks again, everyone!
