Default Vitex and high LH levels

I've been unable to find this on the boards.

Has anyone with a high LH level, and/or a 3:1 LH:FSH ratio seen success with using vitex? Research was done on women without PCOS who had irregular menses and vitex raised their LH levels and produced regularity. It also has helped many women with PCOS so I'm wondering if it raises LH levels or just balances the LH:FSH ratio.

If anyone has had success with vitex and high LH levels please let me know as I don't want to continue using it if I will just be making things more difficult. I would rather switch to NPC.

Thanks and God Bless

Thumbs down Vitex did not work for me

Before I started taking Vitex my LH:FSH was 2:1 (cd3) .... when I went back to the clinic to have my hormones tested (cd3) after having taken Vitex for a month my LH:FSH was 4:1 !!!!!!
Needless to say I stopped taking it immediately ........ I conceived 2 weeks later ~

I do not want to say that Vitex is a bad herb ... it just works for some and doesn't for others .......

The important thing when taking herbs is to do a lot of research and find the right one/s for YOU!

All the best ~

Thanks for the feedback. I've been feeling really great with the vitex, but I think I better stick to NPC to be on the safe side!

Hi rayandme.. can't offer any advice, but I wanted you to know that I'm in the same boat - high LH and trying to find out about vitex. I've read in some books that it's an adaptogen, and should balance the LH:FSH ratio... but read elsewhere that it should 'perhaps' be avoided by women with high LH! All very vague and not backed up by hard evidence. The concrete research results I have seen (when browsing this forum) all show that v. raised LH... anybody know of research showing it lowered LH??

Shaima - congrats on getting pg! Hope I have as much luck!

Just found something in the posts from last June by Emmanuelle concerning Vitex. I guess it is more of an adaptogen:

---------------------------------
Secondly, they told me that vitex only raises LH in non-PCOS women. Vitex is a hormonally adaptive herb. If your LH is too high, it will not raise it...it will normalize it. The studies done on women who had their LH levels rise, were women who first of all did not have PCOS and second of all, probably needed their LH levels to rise. They told me that vitex is usually very beneficial to women with PCOS and they have seen no adverse effects.

----------------------------------
I just remembered that my husband took a supplement to gain size that contained Vitex. He said it's an adaptogen and normalizes testosterone levels in males. Hope this helps!

God Bless

That's good news! But what about shaima's reaction? I think I might try vitex anyway... and just keep charting and waiting to see if it produces o or af. Are you going to try it after all, rayandme? Keep us posted on the results!

Hi Sarah -

I did go back to using Vitex b/c I read it's a better idea to give herbs awhile to work before adding hormones to the body.

I'm wondering if Shaima may have had a surge in LH due to her pregnancy or at the time that her period may have come. Just before AF arrives you do get a surge in your LH levels. I also think that if male supplements contain vitex it must be an adaptogen and naturally balance your hormones, but that is just my opinion and evidence. There isn't research on it's effects on women w/PCOS.

Hi rayandme,

I had my LH tested on cd3 both times, which means on the third day of my period. That again means that I was not pregnant nor AF was due to arrive at that time.

Anyway .... that being answered I just wanted to say once again, that Vitex is definitely a herb that you can give a try and hopefully it will work for you. Personally I did not feel good on it, but there are many cysters here who have had success with it and even got pregnant ...

I am sorry and apologize, if I confused you with my experience, just thought I would share ...

Well, i was on vitex for about a month and a half(my LH:FSH ratio was nearly 3:1), and in the course of that time i had three periods, which was really odd because normally i had a period irregularly every few months. I stopped taking it because i heard that it raises LH levels, and this period is right on track, almost exactly a month after my last one.

It's very possible that it does raise LH levels, but then again one of the determining factors of PCOS is elevated LH levels which the majority of cysters do have and vitex has helped so many. Herbs like medicines have different effects on different people. I hope we all find something our bodies can be pleased with and become symptom free

God Bless.
