Default Waiting for m/c... trying to avoid a d&c

I know this is a sensitive subject since probably none of us wants to talk much about how our loss happened, but I do need some advice if you come across this thread.

On September 1st, I had my first prenatal appointment and the midwife was unable to hear the heartbeat. An ultrasound confirmed that the heartbeat was no longer there, and that the baby had stopped developing at 9 weeks. The midwife talked over my options with me and I decided I'd like to miscarry naturally if I could, although I knew I would hate the wait, since she said it could take up to 3 more weeks. She recommended some herbs I could take - black cohosh, blue cohosh, caulophyllum, and goldenseal. I have been alternating these the way she recommended and I haven't even had any spotting yet. I'm starting to feel like the herbs may not work for me (although I have had a lot of cramping), and I'm wondering what else I should do. I may call my RE's office and see if they can prescribe any drugs for me instead.

For those of you who needed to induce a miscarriage, did you use drugs or herbs? How long did it take? Since I've been on herbs for a week and a half, with only some pink/brown discharge in my mucus (TMI!), should I move on to something else instead of trying the herbs any more? Thank you all for your advice.

I had been using progesterone supplements, and I stopped them and about a week later I started miscarrying.

The pink/brown discharge is a good sign... it might be your mucus plug. If you're seeing that, it shouldn't be too much longer. The cramping is a good sign, too.

*hugs* and I hope it's not much longer.

Only a few cysters opted for the drug induced m/c that I know of, and it was fairly quick. I don't remember any stories of trying herbs. Does your midwife work with an OB who could prescribe the next step? If you want to avoid a d&c, they probably will want to see something happen very soon. You do too, obviously, but the last thing you need right now is pressure on you, so maybe call your midwife, ask about the next step, and tell her your exact feelings about the d&c so that she can be the intermediary with the doc. Good luck with this!

Mine was not induced, but I know that I had several days of spotting at first. Then I just kept on bleeding heavier and heavier. Sorry if this is TMI, but the blood eventually got to an eggwhite like texture. Since you are having a little bleeding, you might want to wait a few days and see if it increases with continued use of the herbs. Are you having any cramping? I didn't have the cramping until the day of the miscarriage. I am so sorry you are having to go through this.

Alenna, I never considered herbs, but my OB recommended something called Cytotec and wrote me a script for it. I decided not to use it because the thought of waiting was too much for me, and went for the D&C option instead.

I hope you will consider going for the Cytotec soon; I think the risk of infection might rise if too much time elapses. Please call your RE or OB to discuss your options.

And, of course, I am SO sorry for your loss...

Sometimes it seems to take forever. I've had 6 natural m/c while TTC and the length of time it takes to begin bleeding varies greatly. I never used any herbs. I guess I was always afraid to induce b/c I hoped that the doctors were wrong somehow, but they never were. I'm so sorry about your little baby. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I used Mistoprosol (sp?) the first time to induce m/c and a D&C the second time ( the heart stopped beating at 8w3d, but I didn't find out until an ultrasound at 12w--no spotting or anything up to that point)--the D&C was much easier emotionall and physically for me. But my acupuncurist also said that she could induce the m/c, so you might try that if you want to continue to m/c naturally.

Ladies - thank you for all the helpful responses. I had called a new doctor's office and scheduled an appointment there for the 6th of October (I had been seeing an RE, but now that I know what I have and how to ovulate, I don't want to keep going to her and paying through the nose.), and have talked to them today about moving my appointment up so that they can see me to help me through this by prescribing meds for me (the midwives can't do that). I'm still waiting to see if the herbs do any good though, and told them I would call next week to schedule an appointment if they don't work by then.

I've had a little more pink in my cm today, so I'm hoping that is a good sign.

Again, thank you for all your responses, and if anyone else has any other ideas, I would appreciate those as well.

I had my bloodwork done yesterday to see how my hcg levels were, and they are still around 3,000... so I have a feeling this could still be a while.

Mustard Seed - if they were 3000 yesterday, then they should be at around 3 by October 3rd. I know that seems so far away, but it's really only 2 1/2 weeks...hang in there...

Saluki - how will my hcg level be around 3 by the 3rd of October? I haven't even started bleeding yet, and the midwife told me that my levels wouldn't drop significantly until that happened. Hopefully it'll happen soon though, since I'm still taking the herbs they recommended and still cramping quite a bit. Thanks for the encouragement!

I was going by what my first OB told me - that once the baby stops developing, HCG levels start dropping, and they split in half every other day. So I took your beta from the other day and calculated its "half-lifes" and came up with October 3.

This was accurate in my case. The day my spotting really started, my beta was 32,098. It must have been down to 2000 or so when the heavier bleeding started.
