I know walnuts can help with blood pressure. Have you got a link to the article regarding walnuts and PCOS?

I eat walnuts regulary but I ahve never paid attention to it helping my PCOS or any symptoms assocaited with it. I believe the benefit from walnuts would be the omegas in it (similar to fish oil/flax oil). Anything that is not dangerous and good for you to eat (although I think the fat is high in them but not so much "bad fat") is worth a try good luck!

My curiosity got the best of me so I ran a search when I first read this thread, and didn't come up with anything. Just now I ran another searcn, and lo and behold, there's a clinical trial underway studying the effect of walnuts in women with pcos. From the press release:

Quote:
[PCOS patient] Espinoza, for one, swears by walnuts. She was part of a UC Davis clinical trial conducted by Kasim-Karakas in which she was asked to include a specific amount of walnuts in her diet.

"I started to have regular periods all on my own," said Espinoza, who had never had a regular menstrual cycle before.

Kasim-Karakas, an endocrinologist and professor of medicine, cautions that the trial in which Espinoza participated is still underway and conclusions have yet to be made with respect to the benefits of walnuts for PCOS patients. The study will eventually include 80 women and should be completed within a year. It compares the benefits of walnuts versus almonds for PCOS patients. According to Kasim-Karakas, books and magazines targeted to women with PCOS often tell them to eat certain foods or dietary supplements.

"The truth is that there is not a single study to support any of those claims," she said.

Kasim-Karakas' research focuses on determining which functional foods, those with proven benefits like fish and nutraceuticals, such as fish oil capsules, actually will help physicians manage PCOS, a chronic disease whose effects on a woman's health changes over time. In a study published earlier this year, she found that restricting simple sugars and carbohydrates and replacing them with protein was beneficial for PCOS patients. In addition to the study involving nuts, she is starting another study comparing the relative benefits of fish oil and flax seed oil for PCOS patients.

*HERE IS THE STUDY INFORMATION*

Do walnuts help PCOS symptoms?
What is this study evaluating?

This study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, Complementary and Alternative Medicine branch, investigates the effects of various foods and supplements with high unsaturated fat contents in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fats may have several health benefits. They may improve blood fats (lipids), blood sugar and insulin. In PCOS, blood insulin levels affect the reproductive function and fertility. Consequently, dietary fat intake may also influence ovarian function. Almonds are a rich source of MUFA and walnuts contain large amounts of PUFA. Therefore, this research will compare the effects of almonds and walnuts on lipids, sugar, insulin and various other hormones in women who have PCOS.

Why is this trial important?

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common condition that affects one out of 16 women. Women with PCOS can have irregular menstrual periods, excess facial and body hair, various hormonal changes and large cystic ovaries when examined by ultrasound. Most women with PCOS are obese and have increased risk for developing diabetes. Although women with PCOS are often advised to increase unsaturated fat intake by consuming various nuts, seeds and oils, these recommendations are not based on any scientific evidence. UC Davis is testing the effects of cost-effective nutrients in an attempt to forestall the development of diabetes, cardiovascular disease risk and infertility in this understudied population.

Who can join this trial?

Women with PCOS between the ages of 18 and 45 years old can join. This study will accept those who have been diagnosed with PCOS. Women who have many of the symptoms of PCOS but have not yet been diagnosed will be given free exams and blood tests to confirm the diagnosis.

What is required?

This study requires a 10-week commitment. The first four weeks is spent determining the usual dietary habits of the participants and to obtain the baseline blood tests. During the remaining six weeks, the participants consume the walnuts or the almonds provided by the study as part of their daily diets. Blood tests are repeated at the end of the six-week period. There will be total of six visits — two lasting one hour; two lasting four hours and two lasting six hours.

All the tests and exams are conducted at the Clinical Research Center located at Sacramento VA Medical Center, 10535 Hospital Way, Fourth Floor, Mather, Calif.

Principal Investigator

Sidika E. Kasim-Karakas, M.D., Professor, Internal Medicine. Director, PCOS Program, Division of Endocrinology, Clinical Nutrition and Vascular Medicine at UC Davis Health System.

For more information please contact study coordinator Dumindra Gurusinghe at (916) 734-5741 or e-mail: pcos_study@yahoo.com.

I was thinking about almonds helping because I (for at least a year) have noticed that my periods are more regular when I constantly eat almonds and I wondered about the connection... now here it is that walnuts are linked...now I don't feel so 'crazy'.

I read in the book "The Infertility Cure" by Randine Lewis to eat walnuts during the luteal phase of your cycle. Interesting! Guess I should eat them all cycle long. I must admit walnuts aren't my favourite nut (I much prefer almonds!) but the one nice thing I find is it helps me get more water in, lol. I find them so dry that even just eating a small handful I need a big glass of water to wash them down!

I must be a weird one then. I love walnuts. I'll have a small handful as a snack or add them to a dish. Never noticed any connection with PCOS though. *shrugs*

well this sounds interesting. A few months ago, some relatives visited us for a day and brought a few goodies to share, which had a big pack of walnuts. It stayed in my cupboard as it was whole/ and i had to break the shell. But finally i did it. The first time i had it, I dont know how to explain it, but i felt better and alive and energetic. I dont know if it had anything to do with treating PCOS, but i ate everyday and felt better. I was thinking of buying more, now i certainly will.

I just bought a huge bag of walnuts. I'm going to take a handful to nibble on at work tonight. It should help me avoid all the easter eggs that are left over and sitting around there!
