As of this October I will be married for 2 years. My husband and I decided that we wanted to have a baby right away but it just wasn't happening. Even though my period was irregular we still decided to try. We tried for the first year and a half and nothing was happening so we decided to seak out a fertility doctor. Upon finding the doctor he ordered that i get a blood test. After he recieved the blood test results he discovered that i had pcos. He perscribed Metformin and i have been taking them for about a week. I really don't know if this will regulate my hormones but we will try it. I have done some research and the road ahead of us looks promising but i just have some questions. i would like to know if it has worked for any or how long it would take for us to have a baby or i would like to hear if it didn't work and you had to take other steps. Please let me know....
Hi! Sounds like you are on the right track! Metformin (either alone or in combination with fertility drugs) is very successful for a lot of us! Give the metformin a few months to work...and it would be a good idea to measure your temperature to see if you are ovulating. Generally, us PCOS women have trouble getting pregnant on our own, but with a little bit of help from a fertility doctor the chances of ending up with a baby are excellent.
Welcome to SC! I hope you find lots of helpful info here - there are plenty of helpful women here.
I'm not doing Metformin, but one of the most important things I am doing (which I started on my own without any help from a dr) is charting my cycle. That way, when DH and I do start trying (in a month or so!) we already know when we should be trying and whether or not I'm actually Oing. Charting (basal temp and cervical fluid) can also tell your dr a lot in terms of helping you. Mine said that because I'm charting that they wouldn't have to wait the standard year before they do any sort of infertility counseling. I also find that charting helps me understand my body and PCOS so much better. It makes me feel like I have control because I understand what's going on.
Best of luck!

Can anyone shed some light on the charting to see if you are ovulating. In the 4 years with my Gyn he has never had me chart this. Where can I get this information and a sample chart?
You just measure your temperature first thing in the morning, right after you wake up, and before you get out of bed. You can get a "basal thermometer" (which is more accurate than a standard thermometer) from the drugstore for less than $10. If you are ovulating, you will see a jump in your temperature the day after ovulation, and then the temps will stay high until you get your period again.
An EXCELLENT book which explains all the details is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler.
A great website where you can record you temperature charts is http://www.fertilityfriend.com
If you click on the ticker in my signature, you can see my last couple charts. (The August one shows a typical ovulation pattern.)

You say you will see a jump in your temperature the day after ovulation? For some reason I thought that when it jumped you were ovulating. At what point based on your temperature do you know "today is the day"?
I have joined the fertility friend site...thanks again.

HI. I just got diagnosed with PCOS. We have been "trying" for a year. We have done clomid and hcp shots plus one IUI. Last month on Metformin (1st mo.) I did not ovulate and had to take provera to get period. I am on day four of this cycle. I am getting discouraged and the metformin makes me CRAVE sweets. I ate brownie batter for dinner twice last week even though you are supposed to stay away from sugars. Anyone else have this or know about success with Metformin and clomid?????
jolandin,
don't be discouraged, i have only been on metformin for about 2 weeks and let me tell you, sometimes i crave sweets but most of the time it has made me soooo sock that i don't even want to eat and when i do eat i have to go to the bathroom right away.
