Default Want to get off BCPs, but don't want to get pregnant

I've been on BCPs on and off (mostly on) for the past 15 years. I was off for about a year trying to get pregnant, and then while I was pregnant. They put me back on them after my dd was born.

I've read all the articles about not using BCPs long term for PCOS, as well as not using them long term in general.

Anyone have any thoughts on what else to use so I don't get pregnant? My guess is that it would still be somewhat difficult for me to get pregnant, but I don't want to take that chance. I'm using some natural stuff along with diet and exercise to control the PCOS symptoms. I think the BCPs are causing problems with depression among other things.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

My hubbie doesn't like condoms (they're not my favorite thing, either) and I was on depo shots for about 4 years. Depo made me literally crazy a few weeks before I was due for the shot. What's the pregancy rate for the calendar method?

I hate the pill also but like u I don't want to stop it and end up pregnant right now. Although my chances of conceiving on my own are slim because of the pcos. I think the best thing for u is to use condoms or get and iud but then again I don't know if that will cause any problems. Best of luckto you!

Planned Parenthood's website has a great section on birth control options-all of them with effectiveness rate, etc. Check it out.
I've been on the pill mostly on, rarely off, for 17 years. I think it's really good for controlling many of my symptoms, but I also have worries about it increasing my risk for heart disease. My doctors have always thought the pros of the pill are better than the risks/cons. What do you all think?

I used a diaphragm. It worked well and wasn't as annoying at condoms.

I don't like using condoms either... I can't feel anything and i know that sounds like a typical guys excuse .. J and I talked about going off the BCP's and he said he'll wear one but ehh not for me

Calander method if I am correct is where you just chart your cycle...when you ovulate, when your periods are - - basically when and when you can't get pregnant...

I don't have any real suggestions... Have you had children yet? If you have IUD's are supposed to be good thats a non hormonal BCP -- If you haven't had them yet you can't get it - -I was told that i would have to sign all sorts of waivers... Not worth it

Good luck sweetie

I wouldn't recommend Depo to my worst enemy. I am on BCP's now and am trying to get off of them. (trying to convince myself is more like it).....I don't have symptoms that need controlling with the BCP's. I feel better off of them also. When I am on them I am very moody and VERY HUNGRY. I have extremely regular periods when I am not on the pill (been spotting for two months on them!!) so I can pretty much use the calendar method but that can be hard for most women with PCOS since we don't ovulate regularly. I would look into an IUD maybe or check out other methods if you don't like condoms...(who does??)...I would steer clear of depo though, I've heard of it messing lots of women up, myself included. Good luck!

Oh, God, no, NOT DEPO!!! Forget that one. Try a copper IUD--it's usually an option Planned Parenthood won't give or mention though.

If you don't want any hormones, you could do an IUD or a diaphragm. Some cysters have said that it can be difficult to get a doctor to give you an IUD if you haven't had a baby yet, but they are supposed to be very effective. Some kinds of IUD's do have hormones in them though. I have heard all sorts of different opinions about how effective diaphragms are, so I guess it depends on how well you use it.

If you want another hormonal method, you might want to try the ring. I wouldn't recommend the patch, though...there have been lots of problems linked to it. I also wouldn't recommend Depo...I have known of lots of women who had horrible side effects on it.
