Default Water broke at 18 weeks!

Hello everyone,

I feel like I've been walking through the past 24-hours in a daze. Yesterday morning I was standing in my office speaking with a co-worker, when I felt this gush of water. I left work immediately, and by the time I got home my pants were dripping wet. I called the doctor. At first the nurse didn't seem too concerned, but scheduled an appt. for me to come in.

Now at this point I had no idea I was even pregnant. I'd been having what I thought were periods, which were irregular/abnormal anyway. The doctor was unsure what was going on, since I was telling her I wasn't pregnant, and thought maybe this was just "discharge." She must have thought I was exaggerating on the quantity. Anyway, as a precaution, she sent me for a blood test (pregnancy) just in case.

Well, my test came back positive, and they sent me in for an ultrasound today. I got to see my baby today, and heard the heartbeat. Unfortunately, there is no amniotic fluid left around the baby. But the heart is still beating strongly.

I feel like I've been caught in a whirlwind the past day, and now I'm supposed to be making "decisions." I don't even know where to start. My husband has been a trooper through this whole thing, but I can tell he's very sad and just trying to hold it together for me.

I'm not really sure of the point of this post...I just feel so lost right now.

Oh my goodness. Whirlwind is right. You poor thing.

What have the doctors told you? While it doesn't always work, sometimes drinking massive, massive quantities of water and staying on bedrest can replenish a little of the fluid. If you want this baby, it is very very important that you are on strict bedrest and drinking as much as you can. Little guy (or gal) is only 5 or 6 weeks from viability. It looks bleak, but I do not believe it is hopeless.

We do have a few cysters here who had PROM - the most recent one I can think of had it at 23 weeks, gave birth at 25 weeks, and now her daughter is home and doing well. Another cyster had a friend who PROM'd at 15 weeks and was able to carry the baby for several months longer (unfortunately, baby's lungs didn't grow enough and she died after about 7 months). It's hard to predict outcomes in cases like these.

I'm sure it's hard to even wrap your head around this, not even having know you were pregnant before it happened. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry!! I really do hope that you have a healthy baby this time around (I think they can sometimes reseal themselves). If you do have a loss, please let us know and we will be here to listen.

For next time, please look into a possible incompetent cervix and preventative cerclage. Sometimes PROM happens because of IC, then the fluid is gone and the cervix seems to look normal on ultrasound. A doctor who does a lot of preventative cerclages would be the person to consult.

(((((HUGS))))) and best wishes!!!

Wow My water broke at home when I was 18 weeks pregnant, but my baby nearly came out with it (I could feel his leg poking out, but I was in so much shock/denial that I couldn't accept it at that point). I think you should be on hospitalized bedrest on an IV and drinking water like there is no tomorrow... If they give you crap about not being 20+ weeks yet, threaten to go to another hospital!

I'm sorry. I know how tough it can be. I also had this happen to me at 15w 4d. I "gave" birth shortly after my water broke.

I had PROM at 21 weeks and delivered the baby within two days. They typically say most people will deliver within 5 days of rupture, but there are always women who defy the odds! Try to stay positive, increase your fluids, rest and cross your fingers.

My water broke around 18 weeks and I was in total shock. I went to see my OB the next morning and tol dher I thought my water had broke...se did an exam and said it hadnt broke because my cervix was still tightly closed. WRONG. Not everyone goes into labor right away when their water breaks early. Obviously she wasnt thinking that.
I then went to see my perinatologist about a week later and he confirmed via ultrasound I did not have ONE DROP of luid left and promptly told me if I was in a "county" hospital or didnt have insuracne they would classify it as a miscarriage and send me home.
WELL, I did,a nd when he called my OB to tell her, I think she felt horrible. Maybe also because she didnt have a sono done on me the day I Was in her office telling her it had broke.
The "plan" was to be on strict bedrest until 24 weeks (point of viability), and be checked into the hospital for the rest of the duration.
I was devastated as we met with neonatologist after another, who all told us the survival odds were not good, because the time the lungs are maturing are around the time I lost my fluid. They said anything can happen though, so you never know...because they didnt know how much his lungs had already developed before the fluid was lost.
I actaully starting having major pain and bleeding at home one night around 23 weeks and my OB had me come straight to L&D.
They were able to stave off labor and admitted me at that moment.
I stayed in the hospital for 5 weeks until I went into labor and had an emergency c-section at 28 weeks.
Our son was in the NICU for 2 days fighting such a brave fight. Unfortunately his lungs were too premature and failed him.
It has changed me forever and a devastating loss to lose a child that we wanted so much through IVF.
But there is hope out there, you just never know how long you may go or how developed the lungs are. There were women on my floor in the hospital that had all had loss of fluid and still hadnt gone into labor. ALthough....the longer doesnt mean the outcome will be better, because it all depends on the lung maturity at the time of fluid loss. I think in my case, the longer I went the harder it made it, because part of me got my hopes up that the lungs would be more mature than they were.
Another thing the peri did tell us....the earlier you lose your fluid, the LONGER the latency period. Thats why some women, such as myself went awhile before going into labor.
Its such a hard thing. I wish you all the best and hope this has a happy ending. I know exactly how devastating this can be.

Hello Everyone,

I am new here; I came across this site because I am trying to find information regarding my personal tragedy. A week ago my daughter was born at 20 weeks, and did not survive. I am completely devastated, and am looking for any kind of comfort I can find, and offer the same to my wife. I am wondering if my wife may have anything in common with the rest of you who may have had their water break at the same time.
She had some bleeding two days before the water broke. We went to the hospital. The nurse checked her on the inside a little bit, I am not sure what she did.The hospital said this was due to a yeast infection she had. They told her to use 3 day monistat. She did this, and an hour or so before she was going to apply the 3rd dose (3rd day), the water broke.
Anyone have a similar story, or some information that can help us? Please, I am not sure where to turn, and my wife is unable to even begin to think about everything that has happened.

Thank You
