I am surprised that it was decided so soon.
I was surprised to hear that they had chosen Cardinal Ratzinger - even though he was the favourite going in. I was sure one of the cardinals from Brazil or Argentina would have been chosen.

GOD BLESS POPE BENEDICT XVI!!

I've been so happy since it was announced! My husband rang me at work about 15 minutes before I was due to come home and said 'Habemus Papum' and I ran to the nearest TV in the TMT department, it was so exciting to see the whole thing and wishing I was there again!!!

Please pray for Pope Benedict XVI He's a very intelligent man, a great theologian and a very strong upholder of our faith. We are very lucky!

Blessings,

Eloise

PS Kara, you're hilarious! And yes, you should feel honoured he said your name first!

I'm not Catholic, but I have a dear friend who is and she has sent me many, many wise quotes from Cardinal Ratzinger over the years. Very exciting news!

Yippeee! I was glad to hear that he was a more conservative man considering what some "Catholics" have been wanting done in the church. KWIM?

Kara...since I'm still relatively new to a lot of this stuff, it's nice to know that he's a good person for such an amazing position.

My prayers are with Pope Benedict XVI!

Eloise (MrsBeavs) and I were kind of discussing how he's conservative and that made his election disappointing to those who are hoping to see change in the Church. I like what Eloise said
Quote:
He's a Catholic leader who is there to preach and deliver Christ's message, not change it!
No, women are not going to be ordained, no, homosexual so called "marriage" will not be recognized because those weren't things that JPII didn't like, those are things that are direct violations of Church teaching. Way to sum it up Eloise!
I'm very happy with the election of Cardinal Ratzinger. In fact, I half wonder if JPII had some foreknowledge of the event b/c he chose Germany as the location for World Youth Day this summer. What a perfect event for Pope Benedict XVI to jump into his "servitude", with the youth and in his home. Very special!

Living in Italy, you can all imagine what an event it has been.

Even though I have seen and heard from many a people that they are not too happy with the decision.

I was personally hoping to see a different coloured pope up this time, it's time to bring the church into the 21st century, if I'm not wrong there was a nigerian cardinal up for voting too, the 3rd world would really have gained from it...

Yes Cardinal Arenze from Nigeria is AWESOME! (and I was kind of hoping he'd be pope too b/c I've met him, but I trust the Holy Spirit) We actually did have a black pope back in the middle ages - Pope Genesius. So to those who say the Church is oldfashioned... I say we're ahead of out time!

Thanks, Kara!

This is such an exciting time...we're seeing so much history in the making...I'm just tickled to be a witness to it.

As for the naysayers who wanted a liberal pope...people, let's get real now. That's NOT the Catholic religion. Give up! Go find a religion that allows what you're looking for and leave us Catholics alone! I'm tired of hearing all the garbage...KWIM?

OK, I'm not Catholic so I hope you don't mind my intruding, but I just wanna say, what's up with the media trying to smear this poor man even before he's done much as Pope? You'd think he was the devil or something from some of the editorials I've read. As for his Hitler youth background, how old was he then, a preteen? Honestly, what were his other options?

Sometimes I don't know which religion gets smeared more in the media, mine or yours. Anyway, he seems like a good man to me from everything I've read about him, although my Catholic mom says he's too old.

Ammaarah! I just love you!

Remember, the media is VERY liberal and the Catholic religion ISN'T. If the new pope came out and said that abortion was the greatest thing since sliced bread and gay marriage was a God-given right...then the folks in the media would hoist that old man on their shoulders and carry him around chanting "Pope! Pope! Pope!" But...he's very traditional (to the media that equals the almighty evil, conservative).

So...everyone will be slamming him.

Interestingly, the Jews are very fond of this man. Apparently they are aware that his childhood has no bearing on his opinion of them.

And...Ammaarah, I think *ALL* religion gets smeared. Apparently those of us who believe in something higher than the American media are a major threat. KWIM?

Also...I'm concerned about his age as well. I don't want to lose yet another pope too soon. I was hoping for a younger pope so that we'd have him around a while. My prayers are with Pope Benedict the XVI for a long, healthy servitude!

And...Ammaarah, feel free to post here all you want. I always enjoy your perspective.

That's true about all religion getting smeared...evangelical Christians get called nuts and apocalyptic, Jews get called money-grubbing and worse, Hindus get made fun of like they're all nuts, and of course the Buddhists have Richard Gere. :p

I think the media is plain cockamamie. The ultra-libs are wacked, and the ultra-conservatives are as well. I try to listen to the voices in my head instead.

I'm giggling with horror at your description of the Pope who thinks abortion rocks. I would definitely bar my doors and windows...the end times would be near for sure!

We have the same type of uberliberal fringe in Islam...PM me if you ever want to check out some of their stuff, just for amusement. Cuckoo! I understand that religion should have its finger on the pulse of what's going on, but why does it have to blow with the wind?

Mom says they might have picked this older pope on purpose so he'd have a shorter papacy. I dunno if this is her pet theory or something she heard on CNN.

And I love you too, Stacie!
