This is my 500th post on SoulCysters and thus I am taking it as a good omen that this also the post where I get to announce that as of this morning DH and I completed the last of the paperwork required to get the homestudy process underway. We have been fingerprinted, filled out our financial statement and application forms, made photocopies of relevant documents, filled out a bunch of other forms, etc.. so we are all set!
I spoke with our adoption counsellor today and she said that we might even be able to start the homestudy within a week or two!! I made an appointment to drop off everything tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.!! I am very excited that things are really starting to roll now...
The hardest part of this initial set of paperwork for us is that NJ does a background check for child abuse charges and requires that you give a list of all your addresses since 1981. Well, for my DH he had 3 places to list and all in NJ (not so bad).
Me? I have moved 21 times since 1981!! It took me days to remember where I lived and when (they wanted the dates!!!). A lot of the moving happened when I was a grad student doing my Masters and had to do work study terms that would last 6 months here and 6 months there... The form had space for up to 4 addresses, so I was told to type up a sheet and attach it... my addresses go on for almost 2 pages! Aye Karumba!!
So, I hope that we have done everything correctly and soon I will be posting about the start of our homestudy!

Heidi: Are you adopting a sibling set? Whereabouts in Eastern Europe are you adopting from?
Our house is all set for the homestudy, with the exception of my husband's "studio". He is a musician and we have an office/home recording studio that is his domain... it is not dirty, just cluttered. The rest of the house looks great. I am a minimalist and an organization freak, so that helps. As well, my Mom was visiting last week to help me with my recovery and she spent the entire time washing curtains, dusting in odd places, etc... actually, this is probably a great time for our homestudy to occur!

I think that we will probably just adopt one child. We have to have a second dossier for a second child which adds another $5,000 to our costs. Besides, I think adjust to having one child will be enough of a change. Although, if I could get a sibling group with one dossier we would probably do it, as long as it felt right. But most people say that even siblings require one dossier per child.
I am glad that your house is almost ready - what great timing!
