Question Weakened immune system- met or coinkydink?

Since I started Met in October I have never been sicker. Not sick as in side effects of met (the only problem I had was, tmi, paiful gas when I went up to 1500mg). AF has, generally, been excrutiating; I have had migrianes, which i haven't experienced in 10 years; I have had a cough, cold, sinus, or lung infection in some way shape or form almost constantly.

I am completely exhausted! I had an appointment with my doc scheduled for this week but (RANT!!!) she cancelled it 45 minutes before hand (and RANT some more, this "emergency" visit was 6 weeks after I called in great distress and now its put off another 10 days!! GRRR )

Anyone else expereince this on met or is my immune system just in the crapper? I don't know if this makes a differnce, but I started drinking/ eating only organic dairy at about the same time. Maybe without out all the the antiboitics in the dairy, I'm just sicker than ever.

I'm probably just grasping at straws here, but I can't even remember what its like to feel healthy anymore! It's so frustrating because its all this small stuff that is so exhausting, its not like I'm dying or anything. I'm just weary

*SIGH*

Lori,

I had the same problem when I first went on met. I was put on it in Aug 2002 and from then until Spring 2003 I had about 6 really bad colds. I asked my dr about it and she said it was just bad luck that I was so sick and had nothing to do with the met but I think it was the met. The good news is this winter I have been fine and I'm on a higher dose than I was last year. HTH and I hope you feel better soon!

YES! I started met in Sept. 2003. In Oct. of 2003 I got my first ever sinus infection that led to bronchitis. This went on until January of this year. I was on antibiotic after antibiotic, had CAT scans done, etc. I saw an Allergist/Immunologist and an ENT. No allergies showed up and the ENT said there was no reason that he could see why I couldn't get rid of the sinus infection. The ENT believed that it was my starting on Met that effected my immune system. To make a long story short, he sent me back to my Allergist/Immunologist. He gave me a pneumonia vaccine to help boost my immune system and gave me another round of antibiotics. He also is running period bloodwork and is monitoring my immune system. I have slowly gotten better and my bloodwork is slowly looking better. Both doctors now believe it was the Met reducing my resistance to infection.

Girls- thanks for the responses! Here I thought I was losing my mind!

I am on my way to the walk-in clinic in a few minutes and will mention all this to the doc. My GP thought allergies too and gave me flonase and ventolin- after 2 weeks I am only worse.

Jeannie- what in your bloodwork was out of wack?

Too bad I have to work this weekend- I am so wiped out I can barely move.

Hmmmm, I think it worked the other way for me. I had chronic bronchitis for over a year before I was diagnosed with diabetes and started on Met. A little while after, my bronchitis went away. I thought that maybe since diabetes can make your body heal more slowly, that maybe the Met, which helped me to lower my blood sugars, also helped my body to heal. The lengthy bout with bronchitis was unusual for me, as I've always had a pretty strong immune system and don't get colds very often (even though I work in a school). I am much healthier now that my diabetes is under control and I eat right and exercise, and I went this whole school year so far without getting sick!

I'm a milk lover and when I switched to organic i did not do well. It was a couple of years ago so I don't remember the details but recall enough to know it was not something I wanted to do again.

On the other hand, I felt very worn down after a few months on gluc xr. Tired a lot. The first month was awesome and my brain fog lifted and I had a lot of mental clarity. Then things started going downhill by the fifth week...

I'm starting Met tomorrow morning and I hope that experience will be a little different. I've read that some women respond better to generic and vice-versa.

I'm in your shoes. Linda. Perhaps it's the combination of the good eating habits and exercise that I have now too, but I have had one cold since I started met 2.5 years ago. Hormonal health meant a much healthier body all around for me.

Hope you guys get feeling better!

Hmm- I don't know how I missed that Met can cause a B12 deficiency and thus wreck havoc on my immune system. I'll start a supplement today and see if that helps.

Default Hope this helps

I took this from the Gluc web page under priscribing information.

This is from the studies done.

Diarrhea led to discontinuation of study medication in 6% of patients treated with GLUCOPHAGE.
Additionally, the following adverse reactions were reported in ¡Ý1.0-¡Ü5.0% of GLUCOPHAGE
patients and were more commonly reported with GLUCOPHAGE than placebo: abnormal stools,
hypoglycemia, myalgia, lightheaded, dyspnea, nail disorder, rash, sweating increased, taste disorder,
chest discomfort, chills, flu syndrome, flushing, palpitation.

In worldwide clinical trials over 900 patients with type 2 diabetes have been treated with
GLUCOPHAGE XR in placebo- and active-controlled studies. In placebo-controlled trials, 781
patients were administered GLUCOPHAGE XR and 195 patients received placebo. Adverse reactions
reported in greater than 5% of the GLUCOPHAGE XR patients, and that were more common
in GLUCOPHAGE XR- than placebo-treated patients, are listed in Table 12.
* Reactions that were more common in GLUCOPHAGE XR- than placebo-treated patients
Diarrhea led to discontinuation of study medication in 0.6% of patients treated with
GLUCOPHAGE XR. Additionally, the following adverse reactions were reported in ¡Ý1.0%-¡Ü5.0% of
GLUCOPHAGE XR patients and were more commonly reported with GLUCOPHAGE XR than
placebo: abdominal pain, constipation, distention abdomen, dyspepsia/heartburn, flatulence, dizziness,
headache, upper respiratory infection, taste disturbance.
