Though I am not a pregnant cyster yet myself, I do read your threads all the time, ladies and they give me much hope! I have a question about wearing tight clothing during pregnancy. My co-worker is 4 months pregnant and is definetly starting to show. The baby wasn't planned and she got pregnant after 1 month of dating a guy, who she is not even with anymore. Because of her circumstances, she has been trying to hide her pregnant belly from other co-workers. She continues to wear her normal clothes, which is starting to get really tights, especially around her belly. I'm pretty sure this is not good for the baby! Today she is wearing some jeans that were already a little tight on her before she was pregnant, so they are even tighter now. She came into my classroom during my planning period and she couldn't even sit comfortably because the jeans were so tight! I've told her several times that she needs to stop wearing the tight clothes, but she says her Dr. says its ok, it won't harm the baby. Is this true? How can that NOT be hazardous to the baby??
Sorry for the long rant!

hmm I don't know for sure but I am showing and I still wear some of my old clothes but I have already had to let alot go. I personally feel sooo restricted and can't breathe and know I need to actually buy some clothes...however all I've seen when I went shopping I didn't like.
My co-worker who is a mother of five tells me all the time (matter of fact) every day that I am suffocating my baby and I need to buy some clothes and that my baby won't grow right but I don't believe her!

While tight clothes are likely to be uncomfortable for the mother, the baby is well protected in there, especially so early on. While it may be a myth, Im pretty sure women used to wear corsets while pregnant. If that's true, of course they wouldn't have been able to lace them as tightly as pre pregnancy. That includes an ad for a maternity corset, from the 1920's.
Anyway, while severe restriction could be harmful, I don't know if there is any proof that tight pants cause intrauterine growth restriction. More likely, they'll cause discomfort and possibly embarrassment on the part the of the mom (if her pants split while she's at work).
If her doctor says it's fine, then it's really up to her to decide what to wear. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I still wear my regular jeans and I'm 6 months. I'm showing, but I'm also 6' and plus size. So... 32 inch inseam pants aren't going to cut it so I just wear a bella band and my pants aren't zipped. It's uncomfortable. But,I have to deal for now. I refuse to wear knit straight legged pants. I'm a boot cut girl.

As other posters have said, the tight clothes are going to cause more discomfort to mom than baby. Honestly, I'm fairly sure that if I tried wearing my pre-pregnancy pants I'd wind up feeling sick - which seems to be the case with anything too tight around my abdomen.
The next time you notice she's in discomfort, suggest a trick for her to try. If she wears shirts that cover the top of her pants (zipper/button area) suggest she take a rubber band, loop it through the button hole and sort of loop it through itself ... creates a knot on the hole side. Then take the remaining loop and put it over the button. This should take some of the strain off - and if her shirt is long enough she can even undo the zipper some. Otherwise, also suggest a band that Target carries (costs $15 and doesn't require a visit to a Maternity store). It's like the Bella band and she just puts it over the top of her unbuttoned pants to keep them up and comfortable.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am taking her to Target this weekend to get her the Bella Band.

You know, pregnant women can be VERY moody and sensitive. Suggesting something like "maybe you should start weaing bigger clothes" might not go over very well. It's her choice to wear the tight stuff, as awful as it may look to others.
If it were me, she was my friend, and I wanted to kindly suggest different clothes I would find an article or advertisement about the bella band (or some other maternity piece) and show her. But gently! You never know how a pregnant woman is going to react.

All my maternity pants are boot cut blue jeans! They have them in petite, regular and long. I got them from motherhood and they look just like normal jeans except the have an elastic waist band! I refuse to wear old timey maternity clothes like some women wear! Plus big shirts just make me look bigger so I wear tighter fitting shirts!
