Angry Weight gain and Glucophage XR

I stopped taking Glucophage 8 months ago because I gained 20 pounds while taking it.
I was so hopeful it would finally help me lose weight and instead the scale kept going up and up. I gave up!
I was on 2000mg a day. I hated popping all those pills. Between that and the thyroid med that i had to take first thing in the morning and not eat or drink anything with, as well as my birthcontrol pills to regulate my period. And the meridia my doctor wanted me to take...which after I started gaining weight turned to Xenical which made me ill...
I gave up.
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks

Are you sure it was the Glucophage causing the weight gain? Did you start any other new meds at the same time? I ask because between your thyroid med and BCPs, something else could have caused it. I gained massive pounds on BCPs.

Also--you may want to consider metformin. I know they're suppose to be basically the same, but it seems ladies on these boards have had success with either one or the other. Might be worth a try.

Have you been diagnosed with insulin resistance?

Sounds like a lot of factors here. Best of luck to you.

Thankful to finally have a diagnosis to my weird problems!
Symptoms since a teen.
Only odd thing about me--popped out two little kiddos with no problem (almost too easy). Go figure.

I have been on bcp for more than 15 years so I know it wasnt that which caused the weight gain at that point. I didnt start the thyroid meds till after the glucophage was in my system for a few months...at which point I had already gained weight.

I just couldnt afford to keep gaining at the rate I was.
I definately do have insulin resistance my endocrinologist was watching me very carefully through blood tests to see how my numbers were improving.

Ohh well this has been a life long struggle for me...I have gotten used to hitting those brick walls after 15 years of resistance.

I'm sorry. I know this has been a frustrating struggle for me too. The body is such a complicated thing. Throw in thyroid problems and wow--you've got lots to deal with. Were you hypo or hyperthyroid?

Do you exercise much? My new years resolution was to exercise, and as much as I really hate it, I am feeling better. I don't know if I've lost any weight as I haven't been on the scale (kinds scared to ya know) but I'm not nearly as tired. Exercise is suppose to help the meds to work better on your insulin.?

The metformin hasn't made me lose any weight, either. I don't think I've really gained, but definitely haven't lost, and it's been about nine or ten months now.

Sigh.

I have HYPO thyroid...slow ofcourse.
It has always been one more piece of interesting information that sheds light on why I am so overweight.
I am doing atkins now for two weeks and have only lost one pound after a 4 pound gain...I got rid of the 4 and one more down this week.
I am hoping this will now start working again and I will drop some more weight.
The body is tricky and if it is off even a little sometimes it takes a little longer for it to get with it.
As far as the metformin goes...dont be afraid of it. I have read so many posts where it has helped people lose the weight.
I just got scared because I saw the weight gain and couldnt afford to gain anymore.
I have faith that one day....it will all straighten out...one way or the other
I have been exercising but not as faithfully as I should be.
I know I have to stop the excuses and get with it
Thanks for all your words of encouragement!!!
