Hello cysters,
I was just wondering if anyone has gained weight on Prozac. I started on 20 mg in July 03, which was during my 102 pound weight loss! Then in November 03 I got pregnant, continued the Prozac, didn't really gain much weight until the last half of pregnancy. I started on 40mg after my daughter was born because of my postpartum depression. It seems there is no stopping the weight gain now! I diet and exercise (same things I did to lose 102 pounds in 12 months) but nothing! I had my thyroid tested after my daughter's birth and it was OK. Just wondered if the Prozac might be making it hard for me to lose. I feel great on the Prozac, but the weight is so depressing!
I weighed 158 when I got pregnant (11/03) and now I'm up to somewhere around 210 (I refuse to know exactly how much )
Thanks cysters!
Jenny

update: 3rd baby born 8th august, another girl, via 2nd sucessful vbac!
Wanted to bump up this old thread... anyone else gaining/ losing on Prozac?
I have been taking Prozac for nearly four weeks now, and besides always being too tired to exercise, I think I am way more hungry than I used to be. I have gained 2 lbs, might be water retention, but I am not sure. I am overweight anyway, I think gaining more would just make me more depressed.
Any input/ideas?

I went to the dr. at the end of June, and he had me cut the dose of Prozac down to 20 mg/day. (Since I'm out of the postpartum depression now!) I'm feeling fine as far as the depression goes, but I'm not losing any weight either. I had a thyroid test too, but it's normal. My baby goes for her 12-month shots today, so I will probably ask him where we go from here! I'm heard of people having a hard time losing weight even after quitting the Prozac altogether. It's so frustrating! I've read that taking St. John's Wort helps both depression and weight loss. (I'd talk to my dr. first but I would try pretty much anything at this point!) Has anyone tried St. John's Wort, or anything else that helped them lose weight while taking Prozac?
Thanks,
Jenny

I have taken St Johns Wort for more than half a year, but it didn't help with my depression. I think it is OK for mild cases, but it didn't work for me. I don't know whether it is safe to take both St Johns Wort and Prozac - you should ask your Dr about that.
Did you gain weight on Prozac or do you just find it doesn't help you to lose? (Something I was hoping for....)

I started prozac in July of 2003. At that time I was in the process of losing weight (I started losing in October '02 and by November '03 I had lost 102 pounds). So I did lose for a few months. I weighed 158 in November '03 when I got pregnant with my daughter (what a distant dream that seems like now!) I weighed around 190 at my 6-week postpartum checkup. That's when the dr. had me double my dose of prozac (20 mg to 40 mg) because I was having so much trouble with postpartum depression. It really helped the depression, but since then (September '04) I have jumped to about 220. I have been at 220 for the majority of that time. I am not gaining now, but neither am I losing!
I talked to the dr. today when I had my baby there for her checkup. I am seeing him in a couple weeks so we can decide the next step. He's thinking of increasing my met (1500mg to 2000 mg) or maybe even starting a weight loss med. I told him I will try anything at this point, and I also really do trust him. He will probably give me my yearly exam then too, just to make sure everything is ok. I want to ask him about the St. Johns Wort too.
So I will let you know what I find out! Let me know if the prozac helps you!
Jenny

MommyJenny
I have only been on Prozac three months and I haven't gained any weight. I had a conversation with a psychiatirst about this and she said.........that antidepresants don't make you gain weight, that eating more makes you gain weight. I don't know how true that is but that is what she told me. Do you feel you are eating more now than before? I just wanted to share, I don't know if it is true or not good luck! I have a question........Is it safe to be on Prozac while pregnant?
Chikana,
Thanks for your reply. I am doing my best to stick to a 1200 calorie diet (of course I have good days and bad days!) My dr. told me that prozac (as well as any antidepressants) can make it difficult to lose weight. That seems to be my problem, not really gaining weight, but not losing it either. I took prozac throughout my pregnancy with Cora. My dr. told me it was perfectly safe during pregnancy, in fact, since depression tends to be worse (for me it is anyway) during and shortly after pregnancy, he said he wanted me to be sure to continue it. Looking back, I agree-- even though most women don't want to take many meds during pregnancy, it's so important to have a happy healthy mommy too! And my dr. said his wife took it during her pregnancies, so I knew he was sure it is safe!
I certainly have no complaints on how the prozac helps my depression! It's great for that! Are you feeling better on the prozac?
Jenny
P.S. I noticed you are in Naperville, I live in Champaign-Urbana!

Jenny,
Thanks for answering my question. I feel totally better on Prozac. We are going to try and get pg soon and I didn't want to get off of it, that is why I asked.
Chikana,
Good luck with ttc! It's good to know you're already getting used to the prozac and that you can continue it during pregnancy! I have noticed some of the papers the pharmacy gave me says not to breastfeed while taking prozac. I continued my prozac throughout breastfeeding, there again, my dr. said his wife did too and there were no problems.
Again, good luck!
Jenny
