Default Weight Loss and Ovulation

I just wondered if anybody here has lost a significant amount of weight and noticed an improvement in the ability to ovulate independent of medications?

I am now approaching the lowest weight I've been since being diagnosed with PCOS, and due to other medical issues, and now being on the pill, I have no idea if I was ovulating or not prior to the pill. Due to the fact that I never had PMS, I always have assumed that all of my periods were anovulatory, but have to admit that I don't really "get" anovulatory periods.

I have 28 lbs. to lose before I plan to ttc, so I was just wondering if there are people out there who saw an improvement in their ability to O due to weight loss?

I think I was uber redundant there, but oh well!

Hey! Well if you are overweight and have PCOS, weight loss will FOR SURE help in regulating your cycles. In addition to all the books etc... I have read, I've also had personal experience.

I am 5'2" and at my heaviest I was 243. I was a size 20 for a year or so, and went between a 18-22 for a long time.

When I got down to 208lbs, I randomly ovulated (May 2009.) The following months I had my period...it was just long, light, or irregular - but it was THERE...which is more than I had ever had.

At about 190lbs I started Clomid and right now I'm in my third month.

Anyway...weight loss helps...for sure.

Thanks! That makes me feel like this could be a positive step for me. I'm trying to get ramped up for ttc, and I'm incredibly oblivious to my likelihood of even O'ing, let alone conceiving.

Coincidentally, I started at 243 this time around (my highest being 280 at 5'3"), and I'm down to 217. I really would like to start ttc when I'm pretty safely under that ugly 200 mark.

i agree! when i was TTC#1 my weight fluctuated between 180-195. i would lose a couple pounds here & there, but then get really depressed and gain it all back. i did not have AF on my own, met didn't do anything for me, & i didn't respond to clomid. we eventually moved onto IVF & i weighed 188 when i got pregnant with my twins. after they were born i weighed 203 & have lost 30lbs since march (running toddlers will do that to you!). but wouldn't you know it, i have had AF every month since april!! and it's been a consistant 36-37 day cycle (except for 1 stressful month was 52 days)! this has NEVER happened in my life!!

I would like know the answer to this too. I've lost 44 lbs and hoping to get under 200 before starting clomid..I have 12 pounds to go. My highest was 256 and I got no AF at all..no spotting nothing. After losing 18 lbs I started getting a light AF...Irregular but still coming. My gyn did some tests before giving me meds to bring AF. An u/s showed thick lining so I was given provera and then I go back for another u/s to check the lining again. Since I've lost weight my gyn wants me to try TTC on my own for three months to see if I will O before starting clomid. I don't have much hope for Oing but I'm hoping to lose at least 12 pounds before starting clomid. Unless there is hope that losing weight helps you O ???????

From personal experience weight loss greatly affected my everything in regards to PCOS.

I weighed 240 pounds when I was married in 2000. Hurt my back, gained 57 more to top out at 297 by 2001. From 1993 when I was 13 and started having periods, I had a total of 16 periods - including bring them on using provera. For me provera didn't even always bring on a period each time.

My husband and I did 4 rounds of clomid which took us a year because my body wouldn't ovulate, nor would it bring on a period without lots of assistance.

I had gastric bypass surgery on Dec 6, 2007 - at 297 pounds. I lost 60 pounds in the first two months and in February I had my first period that wasn't brought on by medication since I was married.

Hubby and I found out on March 6th that I was pregnant - the amazing thing was we had been using condoms the entire time, and there were no "accidents", I was pregnant. I had been using OPK's to check for ovulation as we planned on TTC in June - I wanted to know if I was ovulating. The OPK's all said I wasn't, but getting pregnant meant I was.

We lost our dear baby Christopher on July 4th to non-PCOS related incompetent cervix, a might crappy blow. So we are ready to try again.

I can tell you that I would not have gotten pregnant without the weight loss. I know that for 100% sure unless God himself inteverined.

Feel free to pm me if you want

I know this thread is old, but I thought I'd revive it...

I have lost about 27 pounds since June (196 to 169) and I have ovulated for the last 3 months.

I usually had 40 to 50 day cycles with no ovulation (temping.)

Hope this gives you hope!

Oh, yeah, my diet was a low-GI diet.

I just wrote an article on this today.

One of the sources I used, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, reports that a 5-10% reduction in body weight led to a marked increase in ovulation. Several other medical journals report the same. This is also the basis the NHS uses to dole out treatment in the UK, and their research backs it, too.

Hmm ok ladies and friends of mine...

A year and 1/2 ago weighed 394lbs!!!! NEVER had a period!
Got lap band have lost 100lbs to date and for the last 5 months have had a cycle and not sure if I O'ed on my own becuase I decided to go to an RE and they give you meds regardless so you can get on a schedule of O'ing and stuffl like that.
Well the first miscarriage last month they refuesed to give me clomid said they wanted me to take a break and let my body heal so I was still in the "I can't O without meds" mode so I didn't abstain or "be" careful from having sex when I wanted because I felt I was never goign to be able to O on my own well little did I know just 2 weeks later I O'ed and got pregnant ALL ON MY OWN. I credit it to taking my MET EVERYDAY, and the weight loss but more so the weight loss!!! That did result in miscarriage as well but it could have been due to getting pregnant too soon once again but it was not my fault!

GOOD LUCK!

I have lost 30 pounds (From 155 down to 125) and have no better success o-ing. My doctor was really happy with my weight loss, but unfortunately it hasn't helped me so far... However, next month I am going to go off all meds (minus metformin) to see what happens...

Oh wow, I don't know how I missed this one when you posted it Kendra.

I have always noticed that my menses and such are more regular when I am at a lower weight.
And Gwenneh's right, studies do show that just losing 5% of your body weight, your health improves.
But hey, you've done awesome! I started following a pretty strict low starch/refinedcarb/sugar diet back in Feb., I was at the time about 265-270. My highest ever weight NOT being 9 months pregnant. I lost 70'lbs by July. I have gained about 5-10 back, but that's just because the last couple of months I haven't followed it very well. But Right now I'm ok with hovering around 200 give or take 10lbs. As long as I can fit into all the new clothes I had to buy

I also need to start exercising again. I was up until mid June and had to quit because of my surgery, and wow, I'm the type of person, that if I quit doing something it takes me FOREVER to get back into it.

I started the South Beach Diet 4 weeks ago and am down 15 pounds. Before I NEVER had periods. Two weeks into the diet (phase one) I started my period!! It was the heaviest, most normal period I have had in years! Crossing my fingers!!!!!

I didnt have AF by my self since before my wedding in Aug 07. I would take provara just to shead all of the stuff every 90ish days. DH and I stopped using stuff a while back due to the fact that we just wanted to save money, and figured heck it hasnt happend yet. Then I lost 35lbs from a job change (I am on my feet 12 hrs a day 3x a week) Then in March I got AF by myself. It was 109 days since the last one, but I was shocked. Not thinking I could get pg we just went on our way big surprise that April fools weekend LOL

I have a close friend from childhood who also has PCOS. I don't know how much her highest weight was but she was having lots of troubles with PCOS. She was on Metformin, blood pressure meds, and bcp's (she wasn't ttc). Nothing was working to help her symptoms. Over the past year and a bit she has lost 110lbs (and still going). She is no longer taking any of those meds! Her cycles are perfect 28 days like clockwork and she's pretty sure she's ovulating based on physical signs in the middle of her cycle (she's still not ttc so doesn't know for sure though). For her weightloss has been key to her restored health and put PCOS in it's place!
