hey ladies.. i was wondering if any of yall had ever tried weight loss surgery or know anyone who has. im really thinking about it. so any input would be greatly appreciated
kat. i saw the video about the mini gastric bypass surgery and that's what really got me interested only to find out they don't take insurance. my insurance does cover lapband and gastric bypass though. i used to really want lapband but i'm stubborn and want to lose the weight quick. but i'm way to scared to go for gastric bypass as i know someone personally who had severe complications and almost died
Hi...I just wanted to let you know I have an aunt and a neighbor who both had gastric bypass and the results are amazing. However, both surgeries have been very different. My aunt for example has lost 135 pounds with no problems (just looks a bit too thin). My neighbor lost a great amount too not sure exactly how much but i know it is at least 150 pounds but has had complications that keep him being rushed to the hospital every now and then. I have also thought about it myself but from seeing them I don't really know if it is worth it anymore. I dont have a huge desire to be vo thin i look sick. My biggest concern is my boobs and my two stomachs. I have recently took care of my boobs...i had a breast reduction last week and went from a 44DDD to hopefully a C cup after the swelling and I already look and feel more confident. People tell me I look so tiny on top. Now the belly challange begins. What will the insurance company say.....Hopefully yes they will cover it as medical because of irritation and odor. Sorry that may have been a bit TMI but I thought I might give you some other options. I don't know how much weight you want to lose either. For me it isnt how much weight I would like to lose as to I just want to look and feel better.
Good luck
Hi Tiffany! I had lap RNY almost 4 years ago on 8/3/04. I have a good result with it. I've been complication free (with the exception of some milk intolerance & dumping syndrome if I eat too much sugar) and would do it again in a heartbeat. But my tool works still and I'm still at goal. Ok..so I've regained a few pounds but all for good reason. I'm currently pregnant with my 2nd post op baby. I know more people who are complication free with having the RNY than people who've had complications. Even those that have had some kind of complication don't regret having it done and are thrilled with their weight loss and subsequent results. Beth gave you an excellent piece of advice. Please join us on the WLS DIVAS thread found under the Diet & Exercise Buddies forum.
My WLS has been such a blessing for me. My diabetes & sleep apnea are gone. Unfortunately for me my high blood pressure did return but my doc is sure it's a genetic thing. At least now it's VERY easily controlled with 1 pill a day as opposed to 3 pills a day I was taking before. Also my cycles are normal now (they were non-existant before) and I've been able to get pregnant 2x since surgery both on the 1st month trying. It's quite amazing to go from very infertile to fertile mertyle. If you have questions about the RNY I'd be happy to answer them!

i dont understand all the different abbreviations like RNY and such.. i was leaning towards lapband more so just because it can be reversed if i have any problems and cheaper. but the thing with it is while you do lose weight.. its at an extremely low pace.. and i am impatient.. but the more ive been thinking im thinking maybe i should just weight because i am ONLY 19... i just dont feel like all this weight is ever gonna come off any other way. i'm about 130 over the healthy weight i should be. im jsut confused
Be careful with the lapband surgery. Although it is a reversable thing there have been many complications that actually have raised mortality rates higher than actual gastric bypass. Do your research on surgeons & ask them questions like how many of your patients had complications & what were they.
Tiffany,
research, research, research. That's all I can say. I am pre-op and was originally planning on having lap-band but it has such a high failure rate and is easy to "cheat" I'm going for the RNY (bypass) But again you really need to read up and decide for yourself. It is such a personal decision.
I got the gastric bypass surgery (which is also called the RNY) when I was 22 years old. I originally looked into it at age 19 and wish I would have gotten it then. I am so thankful for my surgery. Because of it I lost 110 pounds and got so much more healthier. Plus I was able to have my 2 sons when before my surgery I didn't even get a period. It can seem scary, but in my opinion, it's well worth it!!
Good luck!

My bff had lap-band over Christmas break, and yeah, her loss has been extremely slow. She is one year younger than me and weighed twenty pounds less than me pre-surgery. I didn't start dieting/exercising until April 1 of this year and I'm only 7 pounds away from her total loss. I feel really guilty some times because she went through all that trouble and is posting much smaller losses than I am.
She had some complications post surgery too. The cuff didn't properly inflate after surgery so she went, like, three or four weeks without seeing any noticeable difference in her stomach capacity. Eventually, she switched docs and they realized her cuff had virtually no saline in it. Once that was remedied, she began losing weight. Even with the properly inflated cuff, she still has to exercise to see any weigh tloss.
She's also been disheartened by the slow loss because her mother had gastric bypass a few years ago and lost HUGE amounts of weight in the first year. She's also learned that a good number of lap-band patients require future surgeries to adjust bands which have slipped, etc. I guess you could say she's having a bit of buyer's remorse.
I used to think I'd try lap-band because I needed to lose 100-120 pounds. I always made excuses about not being able to lose weight. In truth, I was so not following any of the weight loss programs I signed up for or tried. Now, however, I've proven to myself that with hard work I CAN lose weight.
That said, you have to make the decision that's best for your situation. I agree with the previous posters. You have to research thoroughly. Best of luck!!!

No problem. RNY stands for Roux-En-Y. It's the type of surgery that I had and is commonly known as gastric bypass surgery. I specified this because the DS (Duodenal Switch) is also a gastric bypass surgery, just a different kind. Anyway I do want to say that in severe cases the RNY can be reversed as well. A lady I know was having severe abdominal pain that with several exploratory surgeries they (her primary doctor & surgeon) could not find a reason for. Eventually she had her RNY reversed. This is NOT the norm. It was very difficult to do but it was done. She's the only one I know of who's had it reversed. As for your age. Please don't let that be your only factor in waiting to have any type of WLS (weight loss surgery) done. I was just shy of 28 when I had it done and had I known how much healthier I am now I would have done it way earlier. But unfortunately I can't change the past and I did have it done and am SO glad I did. Like my friend Leigha stated I'm just over 110 lbs down and maintaining (at least when I'm not pregnant) at 4 years post op. Also like her I wouldn't be a mom had it not been for my surgery. I'm not sure when you want to have children but having surgery 'now' instead of a few years down the road could make a big difference. Now only in how long it takes you to get pregnant but also in your overall health. Even if you're not diabetic or have high blood pressure now getting the surgery can prevent these things from developing later on. My good friend Jen was qualified on her weight alone. She wasn't diabetic and she didn't have high blood pressure. But now that she's had surgery & lost the weight she doesn't have to worry like she did before about developing these medical conditions.
How long have you been dieting? How long have you been obese? Of course if you're fairly new to dieting and haven't quite exhausted all of your options you should wait a bit before persuing weight loss surgery to try other means of loosing weight. WLS should be a last resort to loosing weight as it is life long (even the lapband should be considered life long) and definitely NOT an easy road to take.
Regardless of what your decision is GOOD LUCK!

If you are confused or scared - don't do it. This is something you should be totally sure about because it is a major surgery and has some very serious risks involved.

Chrissy
I had the lapband surgery and haven't had one complication...actually I hear there are more complications with the traditional gastric bypass than the band...the band is far less invasive!
Although the weight loss WILL be slower, this is no quick fix and neither is the gastric bypass....You will have to learn a whole new lifestyle, don't expect the weight to come off by magic.
