Weight Loss Surgery in Canada

Hi there,

Does anyone know if Weight Loss Surgery is covered by OHIP here in Canada (Ontario, specifically)? Or do people have to pay for it (is it considered "cosmetic") out of their own pocket? I am not considering having this surgery (I don't even think that I am eligible to have it - I believe that you have to be at least 100 lbs overweight to even be considered for it - although I may be wrong about that - I don't really know all of the ins and outs of it - and I "only" have to lose about 50 lbs). Can anyone shed any light on this subject for me??

Hi Jen!

I don't really know too much on this topic either but a sister of a friends had WLS a few years ago and I know she mentioned that since she had over 100 lbs to lose it was covered under OHIP.

My FIL had it done in Toronto about 3 years ago. He was WAY overweight and had many serious health issues, and still had to pay the $10,000 out of pocket. Not sure if this is always the case though.

Unfortunately, he was not committed to the diet and fitness requirements to lose and keep the weight off, so he lost a bit (40-60 lbs at first) and I don't think he's lost much more.

JenK... from my understanding the WLS is covered by OHIP.. a friend of mine is going to the US to get it done as the waiting lists here are insane, covered by OHIP.
