As a bit of background, was referred last March, was sent an appointment in June, the letter was dated two days before the actual appointment. Was on holiday so didn't get it til i came back. As I hadn't let them know I couldn't attend they said I'd have to get my GP to refer me again. After a lot of persuading the surgeons PA agreed to make another appointment for me, the next available was October.
Had appointment in October, didn't see Mr Small (surgeon), seen his nurse and a dietitian for a general chat, got prescribed reductil.
Went for glucose test the week before Christmas. When speaking to two others there for the same thing, they had been referred in August, had their appointment in Oct and were having their follow up in January. I felt a bit put out that it was taking so much longer for me.
Yesterday got to see a surgeon, not Mr Small or his deputy. Anyway I have put on 2lbs since October and from the tests in December it would seem that i have a boderline underactive thyroid. He did further blood tests regarding thyroid and said the answer at the moment is no.
If i loose at least a stone in 3mts then in theory the answer will be yes. If i loose the stone and get approval and then at any time between that and the surgery date (appox 9 mths) i put weight on again I'll automatically not get it. As he put it "one more strike and you're out"
I know they have to justify it to the NHS etc but I'm a bit put out as I met a friend at the hospital who had the gastric band done by Mr Small in October and she didn't have to do any of this, no orlistat, reductil, weight loss etc. However I know that i am lucky that i'm even being considered and am concentrating on the positives.
If you have got this far, thanks for reading

I think that sounds great. Wouldn't it be silly of them to do weight loss surgery and then discover half the reason for your weight gain is because of an underactive thyroid. Will they give you thyroxine for this?
3 months if a long time, and I reckon you can lose a stone. Especially if you get treatment for an underactive thyroid.
Do you want a gastric band?
I think that actually sounds like quite a positive appointment, and as you said, you are lucky you re being considered.
Do you mind me asking how much you weigh?

Not at all, I'm 23st. I had got down to just under 21 in Jan. If i do have an underactive thyroid it would explain a lot of the last couple of months. I've been really hungry eating what i normally do. My hands and feet are freezing which they never have been before and i keep getting sore throats and colds which again isn't tyical, I cry even easier than normal. i just put it down to being made redundant and related things. Plus my mum has an underactive thyroid.
I find out in two weeks whether or not i'll need thyroxine.
It is the gastric band that i would get. Mr Small won't do any other WLS on women who how mignt want to TTC. Although other surgeons do. But i do think the band is best for me

I think that is quite a positive move, they need to be sure that you and they have done evrything they can to help you lose weight.
So what's the plan now weightloss wise? If you need motivation we will all help, and i will be back on the weighloss regime once the baby is born, so we could meet up for some motivation.
Good luck

Hi Briggy,
I think it’s a major shame they are treating you in this way. I have a friend down south who is hoping to get WLS in Cornwall but she has to go through the process of seeing a Physiologist first before an appointment with a consultant for WLS. Even then there could be a wait for surgery of up too two years!
Here in the North West they use a different process again I would have to try tablets, been on Xenical twice didn’t really work and I can’t have Reductil because of High Blood Pressure. The a referral to Hope Hospital Weight Management Clinic which I am doing this month for a programme called Lipotrim (I was keen to go on this… but a new anti-depressant I have started has sugar and orange flavouring in to melt on the tongue and therefore I don’t think I could do Lipotrim now…)
If you then fail the programme or it’s not suitable then WLS would be the next option with the next step being the PCT in your area approving surgery and then waiting for an appointment which at the moment is done via a Mr Kerrigan in Liverpool…
Each PCT trust is so different…
I have thought about going private both here in the UK and in Belgium, but financially I can’t afford it right now unless since rich relative dies and leaves me the dosh! lol
I was all keen to go on the Lipotrim and was hoping to start it sooner than my appointment to Hope Hospital via the Pharmacy programme but you can’t have anything with sugar even the slightest amount will take you out of Ketosis and you’ll stop burning fat.
Although the new Anti-Depressant I have started last week might have to be stopped soon as I am having a bad effect with it, giving it a couple of days and then back to my GP…
Thnaks everybody, i think its the time thing that is getting to me. It takes a year to speak to a surgeon. If I'd had the appoint even 3wks ago i hadn't put on the 2lbs. They knew about the possible thyroid problem 3mts ago but never passed the details to my GP
Think it's because i'm 35 this year, went a bit funny when i was 25 as well
