My doctor took a look at me and said I probably have PCOS and he sent me to an OB and he did the tests but he said he believed that I had PCOS.I love that they acted so fast. They never said anything about my weight but family members and friends would say things about my weight. When I was looking for job it was hard, too.I tried to tell my family that I didn't eat a lot and everyone just said I had to exercise and eat less.I always walk everyday. Now, that I have been on the metformin.I have lost about 15 pounds in 2 weeks and I am eating the same foods which I always ate healthy anyways.I am actually eating more.No one understands or they just think you are lying about it.My hubby was the only one who believed and he tried to tell my family but they think he was covering for me.Now they can't really say anything because I am losing weight thanks to the metformin.I have been explaining the disease to other people at my work but they still think I am eating less or exercising more which i'm not.Crazy how people think and you can't change their minds.

Ladies I have been on the wrong thread. I'm going through the same thing I was going to my ob for a couple of years went through about two to three different rounds of clomid and metformin had two miscarriages. Then all of sudden after the second miscarriage I didn't get pregnant for the next 4 months so my doc sent me to a specialist at the North carolina center for reproductive medicine, this doctor did a saline ultrasound and nothing unusual he put me on a weight loss pill, he said he start seeing results with someone 5'3 at 186 I was 252, now I'm 225, month after month I return to the dr. and he continues to prescribe the weightloss pill then I was like can you tell us when we can start on the first cycle of IUI , he said ok if you lose 15 more lbs, I'll put you on provera to jumpstart your menstrual, then put you on clomid, then give you a shot to release the eggs, then so forth.... these last few pounds are the hardest.

Doctors can be such pains when it comes to weight issues... I mean I understand about health but they don't need to be jerks about it.

Its really sad to hear all these people who are having a hard time from the gynae but I know how you feel.

I met my gynae last august and immediately he said you're overweight and that will make things very difficult. He put me on met and said lose weight and then come back. I went back last week and it was a different gynae, she was like something out of the 50s, she said that I was too overweight to go on Clomid and would not be able to cope with pregnancy, I'm 16st10lbs, I was 18st11.5 when I first went.
She then went on to ask if I was married (I'm not) and she said wouldn't you rather wait until you're married. Is this the dark ages?
I live with my partner, we have been together for three years and we have our own house so we are comitted to each other.

Anyway she told me to lose more weight and come back in 3 months!!!!
At that I lost my rag and told her what I thought of her opinions, I explained how hard I had tried to lose weight and that I had lost over 10% of my starting weight.

She put me on 100mg of clomid!

I wish I had read this article before i met her though.

I am prob only 30 or so pounds heavier than i was when i got pg with my last 2. I have been lucky that neither of the drs that i have been to have said anything regarding weight. I do want to make an appt with my dr though and get on some femara or clomid again.

Im new to this post and I am amazed that I am not alone and not the only one that has problems with their doctor. I can totaly relate to the unsupportive doctor. Im a size 9 and my doctor trys to find other things with my body before she decides to put me on some type of prescription. Im 29 yrs old and not getting any younger and I have tried the herbs, losing weight and so on and still no baby. I wish I can find a good doctor in the area I live who can understand me and guide me thru the right direction.

I went to see a doctor once that just made me feel awful about myself. He said that he would not treat me until I lost the weight. I felt totally crushed and defeated. I spent a year trying to meet his expectations and then though, why not just find another doctor? That's what I did and it is working out great. We discussed the additional challenges, but he didn't turn me away as the other one had because I wouldn't be helping the clinic's stats enough. Don't give up, their are plenty of great doctors out there.

I'll join in the choir, Thank you for this article, it's really good to know that someone have actually bothered to look into if assumptions about weight are true. The first time I was diagnosed with PCOS I went to the doctor because I hadn't had my period for 2 years. She took one look at me and said "You are fat. You have PCOS, which is perfectly normal for overweight girls." She then drew me an illustration showing two circles. One big, then a smaller one overlapping the first. Then she said, pointing to the big circle, this is a group of obese women. Then, pointing to the point where the circles overlapped, this is how many of them get to keep their period. She did no bloodwork, no ultrasound, no nothing. Just eyed me from top to bottom.
I also had a gynaechologist tell me that since I'm fat I'm also sterile. I got a second opinion and she asked "Why the heck would he say that?" She then asked the first GY about it and he denied ever saying it.
Anyway, things have greatly improved since then.
I have not lost weight, rather the opposite, but at least I have doctors who understand, and who don't judge solely based on appearance.

- Kristin.

My old doc told me, shortly before I replaced him, that, "we're going to have to put you on insulin soon, most likely, since I don't think it's realistic to think you'll lose weight. I know you think you're dieting but if you actually kept track of what you were eating I think you'd find you're eating more than you should be."

If I'd been 10 years younger, or less bi*chier, I'd probably have bought his bull....thankfully I have a real doctor who doesn't have her head firmly up her posterior!!

The article is great -- it reassures me that I don't have to put TTC off while I run out and try to lose 40lbs.
