Question Weight for surgery

Can you please take this poll so I can see people's experiences. I am having trouble getting a lap and dye b/c my Consultant says I am too overweight at 18st 5lbs at 5ft 5". I appreciate it's a risk and I know I am overweight but I think bigger people than me have had this proceedure in the UK.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. What is your height if I may ask?

Do many hospitals still offer ovarian drilling these days? Is it only done on those with PCOS rather than those with PCOS?

Sorry for so many Q's! Congrats on your pg!

Default Hi x

Hi there.
Well, I had a Lap & Dye done about 2 years ago now...at the time I was around 16...ish stone...and I am only 4'11"...and my tummy is quite large...although when I lay down it is quite soft.
My doc palpated my tummy to make sure there wasnt too much..umm..'padding' in the way and then they sent me for the surgery.
I also had the drilling done...technically called Laparoscopic Ovarian Diathermy...it is used to replace the old wedge resection op where they open you and remove a portion of ovary (some places still do that!) but my doc has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery so although a lap is painful afterwards its better than the alternative.
My doc said later that she never said I was too fat for the surgery cos it was worth a go, turns out the drilling was worthless cos my levels arent in a state that will be helped by that...so it was a failure...other than to get some footage of my insides and test my tubes (v.v clear).
So I guess its which doc you have...mine tried it first...without mentioning weight but that may be because my tummy was soft enough for the stuff to get through during the surgery...so I guess if you have a quite hard...very well padded tummy then it may cause some difficulties...plus hospital policy may stop them doing it....I know some consultants at my hospital are mad that other docs are even considering seeing overweight patients (dumb, stupid, heartless, small minded people!!!)
So you should ask your doc for the exact reason why they wont do it...ask them to tell the truth!!!
Good luck xx

Thanks for your help ~ You've given me a lot to think about. I'm due to see my Consultant Friday so I'm going to demand some honest answers from him.

I've been ttc for a very long time but without much help from the professionals so I'm about to start asking why that is!

Thanks again.
