I just started Met on Feb 1 and I'm still on the 500mg dose to be increased every 2 wks till I get to 1500mg but AF came today! I have never had a spontaneous period since high school! I'm wondering if I should ask my doc if I can stay on this dose or if I should go ahead and increase my dosage as prescribed. My pharmacist was worried that I will have low blood sugar when he read my prescription. I am not IR or overweight but was dx with PCOS because of the hormone imbalance, lack of AF and inability to get conceive. Any thoughts?

Thanks! Getting AF is a big deal for me. I will continue my meds as prescribed. So far, the side effects are not bad. In fact, I feel better overall.

CONGRATS! Getting Af still makes me jump for joy and my cycles have been regular for a couple of years. Other women take that SO forgranted.
Continued success!

I TOTALLY understand how wonderful it is to get a natural period!
In regard to your question, I would probably go see your doctor and ask about upping your dose. If you are ttc day 3 of your cycle is the best day to start monitoring everything.
I am only up to 1000 (also thin and no IR probs) and I am pretty sure I ovulated a week ago. I am not seeing my specialist for another couple of weeks so I am going to stay on 100mg and see what he says.
Hi! I just started Met in December and my AF came Feb. 3. I, too, am on 1000 mg of Met. I have scoured the pages of this board and various books to learn that 1500 is the official dosage, but both my doc and gyno wanted me to stay at 1000 for at least 6 months and then up it if AF didn't arrive. Now that I've had AF and have been experiencing positive results with weight loss (helped by no white carbs/no non-fructose sugars), I'm planning on staying at 1000 mgs until I start GAINING weight or AF becomes irratic. As long as this dose works for MY body, it's where I want to stay. Everyone is different, after all. I've read of some ladies who can't use Met at all, some who are successful with 2500, some who are succesful at 500. I have also read a few posts where women have said that the Metformin stopped being effective after a year or so; I hope that working WITH the meds by only upping them when necessary will help to avoid that for as long as possible. You should talk to your doctor no matter what, i think. You might as well voice your concerns/questions, even if you end up thinking that you DO want to increase the dosage. I hope this helps! God Bless!!!

Just increased my dose as prescribed to 1000mg and now I'm starting to get usual side effects like some people...diarrhea, stomach discomfort, nausea, slight headache, and thirst. I also constantly have this weird taste in my mouth now. Anyway, I happened to talk to my family doc who says I should stay at 500mg but I should check with my gyn who prescribed it. I'll have to call her after the weekend.
Oh, oh, this is a good thing probably but I don't know if it is due to Met. I also found that I feel sick if I eat the normal amount of food I usually eat. I'm going to try to eat less. Maybe that'll help? Even though I'm hungry?
Yellow-ribbon, what exactly should I monitor on day 3?
Btw, christyz, you look awesome!

Just reading more...I think part of my side effects are from my diet. I think it's not eating less in general, but eating less carbs, that I need to do. I am not overweight but I did start to form a pouch that hasn't gone away even with 45-60min daily exercise and crunches. Argh. My body started changing noticeably last year. Not weight-wise but shape-wise.

I was just going to say QUALITY of food seems to trump QUANTITY on met.

Congrats on getting AF! It's a good feeling. I got AF too for the first time ever when I was put on Met but I didn't ovulate until Met was doubled to 1500mg. GL!
Just an update. I talked to my gyn who decided that I should stay on 500mg for now. I guess I will stay 500 mg for now even though I haven't ovulated. If I still don't ovulate, then we'll increase the dose.
