I went in to see my dr. on the 7th as scheduled. He went thru all my lab work and said all tests came back NORMAL! WTH??? I am so confused..so frustrated... I much rather would have had him dx me as PCOS instead of still NOT knowing what is wrong w/ me. I didn't walk out of there with the actual #s and have called in today to get them so I can post them here and get y'alls feedback. My thyroid came back normal.. my LH ratio or whatever came back 1:1 I think he said... But..still no explanation. He did NOT test my insulin/glucose but he did feel maybe I was IR due to how I've been feeling, etc.. so he did give me a rx for Metformin. I haven't started it yet..but will. If it's not PCOS..and my b/w came back normal..what is causing the hair loss, the hirsutism (sp??), the acne, skin problems, inability to lose the weight around the midsection, and my irregular periods??? Ugh!! He did say that by the progesterone levels, it appears I ovulated..so that's good..but then..what is the problem!!! Oy vey..I'm so darn frustrated. Any insight girls??? I'll post again later when I get the actual #s. Thanks girls.
Have you had an ultrasound done? Because from what I've heard blood tests aren't always the whole answer and should just be used in conjunction with other tests to give a dx. Did your doctor mention where to go from here, your symptoms do indicate PCOS.
Wait and see what the numbers are on the lab work. If you don't feel happy with what you've been told, go back or find another doctor if you can.

I asked this exact same question myself just over a month ago. All my blood tests are normal also, and no IR. I have the symptoms of a hormone imbalance (cystic acne, hirsutism, infertile, etc) but the only thing that came up not normal was my lovely polycystic ovaries from the ultrasound. It might also depend on what time of your cycle you had the blood tests done, although my NP said it doesn't matter, some people here say it does.
If I were you I would have the ultrasound. You may need to find another dr. if this one won't give you the ultrasound. Two ultrasounds are done, a regular on the tummy (which you need a full bladder for) and then internal (vaginally). It's a bit uncomfortable, but no more than a pap.
It may also not be a bad idea to do the IR test, not sure why they didn't do that anyways.
I know how frustrating it is!

My doc did not do any lab work. He took one look at my ovary and said - Yep VERY polycystic. I called the nurse and asked her - DO I need labwork to confim the diagnosis? SHe told me that my left ovary was showing all the classic signs of PCOS. 1500 mg of Met now and I go back in 3 months.
Okay chicas.. Dr.'s office FINALLY called me back.. here are what the results were:
TSH 1.7
LH 3.5
PROLACTIN 11.5
TESTOSTERONE 55
PROGESTERONE 10.1
17 HYDROXY PROGESTERONE 408
ESTRAIDOL 161
FSH 3.5
So.... Dr. did give me an RX for Met.. guess I should get it filled. I just hate being in limbo. I go back in November and will ask for an ultrasound. Let me know what you girls think of the lab results. Oh... my blood was drawn on CD21..so I was in my luteal phase. Thanks girls. **hugs**
okay.. one the levels could be considered normal by one lab and abnormal by a different lab it depends on what the labs "policy" so to speak is and what the doctors experience is... also try to xclarify with teh doc if he/she meant that you horomones are completly normal or if they are normal for PCOS. My endo told me my horomones were normal, but what she meant was that they were normal for a woman with PCOS. Sometimes the doctors think that if you suggest that you have the condition that you understand what they mean. There are a copule other conditions which closly mimic PCOS, so if you dont have PCOS you could have one of those - but definatly insist on the ultrasound thats the tried and true method..(at least if your horomones come back "normal" and you dont know where to go from there).
Good luck and keep us postd.

Hey 0 it took me (and my mum) 4 doctors before i was finally and officially diagnosed. Blood tests, 2 ultrasounds, internal various charts to fill in later. Patience was all my mum kept saying - try as many doctors as you need. Like you said a dx is better than not knowing. Good luck x
Jeanie, all laboratories differ in the ranges of what's normal. And even if you do know what the "normal" given ranges are, my endo said the labs make up those numbers anyway. For example, I had a blood test on my testosterone and the given range was something like 50-100 and mine was like 60, so my regular doctor said it was fine. However, my endocrinologist said that for a woman my age, it should be around 20. So there you go!
