Default Well its official....

My endo confirmed today--I have PCOS & hypothryroid and even though my TSH is "within normal range", my Free T4 is low and I have a simple goiter, so she started me on levoxyl.

The endo also said I would most likely benefit from metformin....but she wanted me to have the oral glucose tolerance test...the one that lasts 2 hours...so I had that taken care of today after the MD visit.

She told me that my FBS was right at 100...which is just crossing the over into a pre-diabetic range. My fasting insulin level was 20, with normal being less than 17....and my hemoglobin A1C was 6.1, normal less than 6. My testosterone and LH:FSH levels were all elevated as well...

My question is I am a little unclear about why I had to have the glucose tolerance test too. Does that need to be abnormal/elevated too in order to start metformin when there is a PCOS diagnosis?

I just want to feel better soon....I want my life back!!!

Hi, welcome to SC! My first blood tests were all OK, but I was lucky enough to have a dr. who diagnosed me based on symptoms and gave me met to help with those symptoms. He has since diagnosed me with diabetes too, but I was already taking met for the PCOS and I think my diabetes could have been really out of control had I not been on the meds and working on diet/exercise. I think it depends on the dr. whether or not the GTT has to be abnormal before you can start met. Mine doesn't think so. It does sound like met could help you. If you do start met, I found that I had less side effects than some cysters by gradually bumping up the dose and by always taking the met right in the middle of your meal. Hope this helps! Let us know what you find out!
