Angry Well, Provera worked, but...

at what cost??? After a year & a half without a period & six months on Prometrium with no results, I've finally gotten AF after only one 10-day cycle of Provera. However, I have definitely suffered from major mood swings (DH & I have fought more during these past 2 weeks than we have in 2 years!) & I'm constantly getting irritated with my kids. My face has also started to break out a whole lot more too!

Also, now that AF is here, I am so sick. The cramps are so unbearable that it hurts to walk. I've also got such a terrible backache that I literally cannot stand up & I would almost compare them to labor pains. Thank goodness I'm off this week, or I don't know how I would be able to go to work. I'm popping extra-strength Tylenol like they're Skittles, but they do nothing for me. My Dr.'s office is closed this week, but there's a nurse on-call. I finally called this afternoon, but I haven't heard anything from her yet.

Does this sound normal to you? I didn't have any side effects with Prometrium, but it didn't work for me. Provera does, but so far it has made my life a living h***! I'm in a no-win situation & I don't know what to do. Please tell me there's light at the end of this terrible tunnel!!!???

So you haven't had AF for a really long time? It sounds pretty normal. All that stuff tends to "back up" when you don't so it would only make sense that after a year and a half, it would hit you like a ton of bricks!

Usually it's only really terrible the first couple times after you haven't had it for a while. I would say try to ride it out this month and if you're planning to use Provera again, worry about it if it stays the same or gets worse.

I have used both provera and prometrium and even though both work to induce af, I prefer provera of prometrium.

If it has been a very long time since you had an af then I would say that this is somewhat normal. It has happened to me like that if I have not had an af in over 6 months. When I use it ever 2-3 months my periods are not too bad.

PAC....I know your pain. I haven't had a period for about 8 months and MD prescribed Provera 10mg for 12 days. I've taken it before without any side effects, but only for 10 days. This time it hit me like a ton of bricks. I've been in bed for 4 days with cramps, back pain, headache, diarrhea, and nausea! It was horrible. As much as I'm dreading it, I will be taking the Provera again in February. I can only hope that side effects will be minimal.

Butterfly-It shouldn't be too bad in Feruary since it will not be that far between af's.

I hope you ladies start feeling better soon!

I am currently taking Prometrium. I haven't had a period since I had my son 16 months ago. I use to have to take Provera but this time they gave me Prometrium. The Provera did give me horrendous mood swings but the Prometrium doesn't seem to be working. I am on day 6 taking 2 at bedtime and nothing has happened yet. I guess it will all start next Tuesday when we go back to school and I have to deal with 25 third graders. Won't that be fun.

I hope things get better for you.

I know all about the mood swings/pain of being on provera. I felt sorry for dh that he had to live with me. The really bad thing was, I couldn't stop being a witch. I could hear how I sounded, but I just couldn't stop. When I told my doc about the server mood swings she said that she'd was not going to put me on it again. We moved on to prometrium, it worked..........for the first month. Since then I've had a 1 day period each month. I decided to just stop with the prometrium so since Nov. I haven't had a period, I also stopped my met, (not such a good plan, I gained 13 pounds that month). I started it again in dec and ta da I got a real period! I don't know if going off, then back on made a difference or if my body just decided "hey it's time to bleed like a stuck pig!!", but provera = all bad! When I told my doc about the prometrium and the 1 day period she said, but at least you're getting one now, lets work with that. I didn't stay on the provera the next month to see if it got any better, I just couldn't do that to dh. I was thankful that he got to leave for 9 hrs/day for work, and didn't have to deal with me. Having this disease can be so frustrating and discouraging sometimes. I hope you find something that works for you.

Default Question

How long was it until you ladies got AF after taking Provera. I'm on Day 2 off of it and nothing I'm just curious. As far as side effects go I had pimples 3 of them but they went away, also some minor mood swings and some really minor cramps but nothing yet.

Keli- My experience has been that it has started as soon as the last day on Provera and as late as the 5th day after finishing Provera. Glad to hear that you're not having all the awful side effects. Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. AF is gone - thank goodness! (And so are the nasty side effects of Provera.) My dr. wants me to take another round of Provera in a couple of weeks & see if the same things happen. WTH??? Granted, I did start my period, but I had to go through hell to get it. And now he wants me to do it all over again? He never did tell me what my other options are, so I don't know what else I can do. I do know that Prometrium didn't work, so that is out of the question.

Well, I guess you'll hear me on here again in a couple of weeks ranting about how miserable I am.

Oh well, thanks for being there for me! There's no one else who wants to hear about what I'm going through.

ETA: Dolphin, thanks for the warning about the link to breast cancer. My grandmother died from breast cancer & my aunt had a breast cancer scare, so it is definitely one of my concerns.

I have taken Provera on & off for years, too. I've never experienced side effects - mood swings, acne, etc while using it. However, when I went nearly a year without AF, I started another round of Provera & she came pretty bad. (cramps, bloating, etc)

Also, I've never heard of Provera being linked to cancer. Hmm, I'll keep an ear out but everything causes cancer these days!
