Hi, I would really appreciate if anyone could give me any feedback.
Do well-woman clinics only deal with female related problems or can a woman go with a more general health complaint for advice and possibly an examination?
For about the last 5 weeks, when I've been going to the loo, I've noticed some blood on the stool. I had the exact same problem about 6yrs ago after passing a very hard stool - problem appeared to be a fissure and lasted a couple of months, but I don't just want to presume it's the same thing. I intended to see my GP but she's away until mid-Dec and the locum is bloody useless. A WWC runs locally on Friday afternoons and I was going to pop in tomorrow as I get off work early... but... I don't know whether they will only see women with gyn/breast/PMT, etc probs.
Does anyone know or had any experience of going to one with a non-female related ailment? I'm only after a quick rectal exam to check for a fissure or piles, do you think they would do this for me or just tell me that I should go to my GP (even though I would follow it up with my doc anyway), but it's causing me a bit of worry and I would be grateful for a quick check.
Yes, that's what I was thinking. I can't get hold of the right phone number for love nor money otherwise I would have called them and asked about it, but I might aswell just pop along and ask - just didn't want to feel daft if they turned me away.
Well, I popped down yesterday afternoon and they turned me away : ( Well, the receptionist did. I asked if the clinic deals with female related problems *only* or will the see you for more general things aswell. She started reeling off that they'll give out the pill, fit the coil, etc (all things that still come under the female umberella) so I then cut in that my GP was currently away and I didn't want to see the locum but that the symprom I had come with was bowel related and she instantly shot back with, "No they don't do that! Definitley not!" *sigh*
I wouldn't mind but the place was completely empty, I'm sure it wouldn't have cost anything to have just buzzed through to the doc to ask if she would be willing to give me a quick check, but I did even ask if t was possible for a quick examination as since I mentioned the word "bowel" the receptionist seemed pretty adamant.
Shellie - yes, you'll find your local health centre will run a WWC and you can go with any female problem or contraception issue.
You do really need to see your GP as the nurse has probably had the training to be dealing with the family planning issues which is what the well woman clinics mainly deal with.
Also blood in your stool can be a serious problem which you may need tests for & it could be that it would have to be your doctor that orders them.

Oh yes, I will see my GP when she comes back, but an actual doctor *does* sit at the WWC (that's why they're very good for gyn/breats problems that you may be concerned about) that's why I went there b/c the doc would be well qualified in giving me a quick check, but I suppose they can't really deviate from what they're meant to be there for.
