Default Wellburtrin XL vs. Generic (Bupropion)

I've been on Wellbutrin for a while now and my dose is good & things are going well. Usually I don't have a poblem taking generic drugs (for example, I take Metformin, not Glucophage...doesn't bother me). But I got my Rx for Wellbutrin filled yesterday and the pharmacy gave me Bupropion (the generic for Wellbutrin) instead.

Generics are supposed to be the same as the name brand stuff right?! Well...comparing the 2 pills...they look really different to me. The Wellbutrin name brand (150mg pill) is about 1/2 the size of the generic but they're the same height. Also....the generic ones smell REALLY GROSS.

I feel like I'm being really dramatic or something...and I'm not trying to be! It just seems weird that they're so different. I guess I'm used to Met vs. Glucophage...they're a lot closer to each other so the switch didn't bother me I guess.

Is anyone on the generic of Wellbutrin? Does what I've described sound right?

Well...I called the pharmacy just to make sure it was the correct generic (the extended release of Wellbutrin) and they confirmed that it was. I Googled some things & it seems they are the same. They have a different coating (which I guess accounts for the gross smell).

I was mostly worried they gave me the wrong pill or something accidentally but it seems right. I guess I'll give them a shot & if things don't feel right I'll ask to be switched back. I won't be able to get them at the base clinic (we're military) so I'll have a high co-pay (as opposed to no cost) but I'll live if I have to switch back.

I guess for now I'll give them a shot...

I've only ever taken the generic (I just started it about four weeks ago), but I've got the same cost issues: if I don't get a generic, the insurance company won't cover it at all and I have to pay the full retail price--as opposed to free with the generic. Yikes.

I do remember when my Zoloft was switched to generic, though. It did seem like I felt slightly different. I couldn't quite put my finger on what was different, but it all even out in the end.

The generic WB XL is known to be less effective for some people.

I've taken Wellbutrin for probably about 5 years, and last year (about a month and a half after switching to the generic) I started to feel kinda crazy. My depression came back full force, which was odd because I'd just eliminated a huge source of stress from my life, and I was very anxious and just 'crazy' feeling. My mom saw an article in our local paper about people having problems with the generic and she clipped it out for me.

Within a week of switching back to the brand I was feeling significantly better.

If you're having insurance coverage issues, see if your doctor will write for the 150 mg pills instead of the 300's (you'd take 2 a day if your dose was 300 mg). Since there's no generic for the 150's (yet, and hopefully not ever), there's a better chance they'll be covered.

for more info on brand vs. generic, see: http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/archi...wellbutrin.php
