i took paxil for generalized anxiety disorder for 6 months, and i hated it. it made me feel like i was numb and sluggish. coming off of the medicine, though, was the worst. i had horrible withdrawal symptoms, including severe dizziness, nausea, suicidal feelings, and a buzzing in my head. (http://www.quitpaxil.info/ for more info on paxil withdrawal)
as always, you should talk to your doctor and make your own decisions, but based on the paxil experience i had, i would suggest trying wellbutrin first. good luck to you.

I had a really bad reaction to paxil! Keep in mind this does not happen to everyone! I became way more depressed, panic 24/7! I was off it in about 2 weeks! My doc said it was mania. Cause the pill caused me to have a very hightened sense of awareness.
I am curently on 20mgs of celexa and all is working fine now.
GL whatever you decide

I have been on Paxil for about 7 years now. In the beginning it was great. It really helped. I had such panic attacks. I would plan my outings with my family around the routes to hospitals. After being on it for a while it does just make you feel horrible. And if you miss a day or two!!!! I am currently trying to get off of it. I was on 30mg a day. Around thanksgiving I starting dropping my doses. Getting off has been slow and painful. You can not do it to fast. The withdrawal is worse than anything. I am now down to 5 mg a day ready to move to 2.5 mg. My personal opinion, stay far away from it. But for yourself you really have to do what is right. I would see what more is out there first. Paxil was just starting to be pushed when I started it. After 5 years of trying to get off I am hoping that this is the year I can do it!
Took Paxil in the mid 90's. It helped my depression, but I gained a lot of weight and I started to dislike the way I felt on it. I gradually decreased my dosage to get off of it. However, I didn't have a hard time with that. I didn't take anything for several years. I have been taking Wellbutrin XL since January and my depression is much better. I felt a little weird when I first started taking it, but after a couple of weeks, I felt normal again. I think it has helped my control my compulsive eating, too.
No negative side effects that I can tell. I seem to be thirsty much of the time, but I have really always been like that. I took 100mg of Wellbutrin XL for a week and then the dosage went to 300 mg. It was suggested to me by my dietician. When I asked my dr. about it, he indicated to me that he thought it was a good medicine and precribed it for me. He knew I had been having a hard time with my weight and had not felt well in months. I started taking Levoxyl for hypothyroid in July, 04 and that has helped, too. My husband says he can tell a major difference in my attitude. I have lost 26 lbs. since November. I don't seem as obsessed with food, now. I still love to eat, but it seems like I have much better portion control.
I took paxil and it didn't seem to help my depression. I switched to wellbutrin and I really liked it. I think it helped me lose weight too. However, when I first started taking it, it seemed like it really revved me up for the first few weeks. I had tons of energy and got tons done. It felt like I was on fast forward for about two weeks. I took it for a long time with zoloft. These two drugs counter acted the side effects of each other.
Now I only take wellbutrin and I feel great most days! :p
I took Paxil for 2 years for depression and anxiety. It worked great for anxiety and pretty good for depression, but I gained 20 lbs, had terrible nightmares, and had crying jags and a lot of suicidal thoughts while trying to get off it (took me 2 tries over 6 months to wean myself off of it, and I ended up taking Zoloft for a couple of months at the end to keep myself together, then I was able to get off of that pretty quickly). I know not everyone has problems with Paxil, and it did do wonders for me at a time when I was really falling apart, but it was so horrible trying to get off it that I wouldn't recommend it (plus those 20 lbs didn't go away when I got off the meds, darn it).
i've been on both...seperately and together. i was on paxil before welbutrin...it took the edge off of the panic attacks. the wellbutrin worked for a while--i probably don't really count anymore because instead of the major depression i had been dx with for many years, i have now been dx with bipolar 1. now on adderal and risperdal...
gl with whatever you decide,
-talk to dr about the pros and cons of both--explain you have some questions..
-might also go talk to pharmasist (sp)they are often more familiar with the different side effects that you might have and how well the drug plays with others..i have a great relationship with my pharmascist and she has helped tremendously..i also have a new dr who i really like.
again i want to wish you good luck and keep us informed...

When does the Wellbutrin XL kick in? I just started a few days ago. Only thing I am having is a nervous stomach; No problem w/ jittery ...high energy. I am on 150mg. And I take Met. I hope I feel better soon and stop also my obsession w/ food. I have an eating disorder and I am having pblms w/ binging & purging. I chew & spit food out and I am having trouble stopping it. I see a therapist and group, but I actually relapsed after BC made me gain weight. I am not super thin by any means, just normal wt. Good luck to others.
I have been taking the paxil cr and it has worked great, only thing is now i can no longer get it anymore. They stopped making it.. Thats just what I need. I am scared to change, I dont want my panic attacks and depression to come back... I was on zoloft for 3 years then one day it just stopped working.. weird.. I like the time controlled release and hope there is another pill like this to go onto.. Anyone have any suggestions?!?!?!?!? Thanks Amy

I was on Wellbutrin, zoloft, and a few others. All of them made me either suicial or homicidal. So when I got pg last year, my panic attacks and depression about killed me. I was put on Paxil, and never looked back. I wouldn't be able to function without Paxil. I have no side effects from it, and am actually able to control my temper 100x's better than ever. And yes, they stopped making the CR, because the plant that made it had some sort of problem. But they will start again. Just do the regular Paxil. As long as the dose is about the same, and you take it spaced out evenly (like I am on a high dose, so I take one at 10am and 1 and 10pm) it shouldn't be any different than the CR. If you notice it not working, sometimes upping the dose from what the CR was might help. I was on 67.5mg of CR and now on 60mg of the regular Paxil. I haven't noticed a change, other than it getting harder to not be emotional...but that's the pregnancy hormones.
Each person really does react differently to each medication. It's suggested you give a medication a 8-12 week try. Only stop the medication if you have feelings of suicide or homicide, and make sure you tell your Dr. first before stopping because of problems with withdrawl from any of those meds. Sometimes Dr's add a 2nd medication while weening off a med to help.
And yes, ask the pharmacist. They know a lot, and can take some extra time to tell you pros/cons.

I tried the Wellbutrin. Actually, it's bupurion the generic form of wellbutrin. I am on a really low dosage only 75 mgrams. My problem is that I felt it. I felt kinda foggy. A little headachy and just a little funny. So I stopped taking it after 2 days. I know this probably isn't the best thing but I did.
Has anyone ever felt like they are making themselves depressed? That's how I feel a lot. I feel like I am doing this to myself. I feel like there are things I need to do that I don't do. ie: eat right and exercise, schedule my life better, This has happened to me many times before. I have this fear of taking medication. I hate feeling the meds in me. I also don't really like being super emotional and always thinking about my problems/insecurites/childhood blah blah blah either.
I feel really pretty scared right now. Things are constantly swimming around in my head. I really wish there was a test they could do to see if I'm depressed or not, and then I could feel comfortable about taking the meds.
