He was running super late, and seemed to be in a hurry, so I can't remember what my levels were, but my fsh? was all out of whack he said , and my ultrasound showed loads of small cysts no more than 1 1/2 cm at biggest on both ovaries, confirming his original diagnosis of PCOS. So he says I should take Provera to bring on a period, but I remind him that I just had one, and do have one every month, he did'nt seem to be hearing me much.
I am worried to take anything, because the first incidence of a cyst I had was went I was on Progesterone before and became pregnant, and had a ruptured corpus luteaum that required surgery.
My main symptoms now are weight gain, abdominal bloating, premenstrual pain when bending, and heavy cramping, along with slightly spotty and/or late periods, no sex drive, and some pain with intercourse.
He said perhaps I am in the early stages of PCOS, and maybe it will get worse, or maybe will resolve on it's own ? He did'nt want to do any further testing of hormones, or insulin resitance, and said just to try the provera and see if that fixes my symptoms.
Anyway, it felt very businesslike, and not much like he was listening to me, more like he just wanted to send me on my way.
Has anyone else been given Provera only and sent on thier way ( he even said I don't need a follow up). Should I take the med, or get a 2nd opinion ?
Advice needed please, thanks !
I just got done taking provera. It was given to me because I did not get periods and I had not had one in 15 months. I finished taking it on Monday and late last night AF came to visit. As far as your question, should you take it or not. I would call the Dr office and ask why he wants you to take it if you do get a period. I thought it was only to help get a period. I don't know if it treats any other symptoms but I would not think so.
Now I am curious and I am going to research it. I will post back in a few minutes.
Provera is derived from the female hormone progesterone. You may be given Provera if your menstrual periods have stopped or a female hormone imbalance is causing your uterus to bleed abnormally. Provera is also prescribed to prevent abnormal growth of the uterine lining in women taking estrogen replacement therapy.
Other forms of medroxyprogesterone, such as Depo-Provera, are used as a contraceptive injection and prescribed in the treatment of endometrial cancer. Some doctors prescribe Provera to treat endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual tension, sexual aggressive behavior in men, and sleep apnea (temporary failure to breath while sleeping).
