Hi ladies,
Forgive me if this is in the wrong place. Ive never started a thread here before. After being dx with PCOS in late 2005 I have been to a large host of doctors. None of them even barely understanding PCOS. Today I got a new referral and went to see a "specialist". Instead of putting me on a treatment plan he decides to retest me all over again. UGHHHHH! I went through an exam, ultrasound and blood work. I have to wait seven days to know the results. Late last year I quit taking Metformin after three months because it made me so sick. My old doctor just quit treating me basically saying there is nothing she could do because I couldnt take the Met. I explained this to my new doctor today. He told me the ONLY medicine I could take is Metformin and he may try me on the extended time release version. He said I either have to get on birth control pills ( which I dont want to do bc we have been ttc since 2002!) or he can "attempt" to treat the infertility. I am so frustrated. I have seen many women on other medications besides Metformin. When I brought this up to him he said there is nothing else. Does anyone have any suggestions for either a new doctor or some specific meds I can research and take to him? I am in the Fort Worth area. I asked him about medications or treatments for my thinning hair and weight gain. He again said the only medicine for any of my symptoms is Metformin. Does this sound correct to you all? Any help is appreciated.

That does sound wrong to me, although I don't know a lot about the meds if you're TTC, since I'm not. Are you going to a PCOS specialist, or a regular endo, or a fertility specialist?
A lot of women seem to have luck on the Met ER.

Did you try taking Metformin at a very low dose and building up? It has been a wonder drug for me. Please give it another try, if you haven't tried it like this.
This is how my Endocrinologist had me start it:
Met Dosage
First three days: 1/2 pill once a day w/ Breakfast (250mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1/2 pill w/ Breakfast and 1/2 pill with Lunch (500mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1/2 pill w/ each meal (750mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1 pill w/Breakfast, 1/2 pill w/Lunch, 1/2 pill w/Dinner (1,000mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1 pill w/Breakfast, one pill w/ Lunch, 1/2 pill w/ Dinner (1,250mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1 pill with each meal (1500mgs a day).
Later on I moved up to 2000mgs a day
You can change up dosage every five days or more instead of three (if you are still having problems). I really hope that it will work for you. I will never give up my Met.

Medications and Supps listed on my profile.
There are other meds, but Met. does reduce misscarriage rates in women with PCOS, and increase fertility rates. There are other insulin sensitizers on the market, but I don't know which are save to TTC while taking. Please check this link: The Newbie Road Map
Thanks to all of you for your help. My regular GYN started me on 1500 mgs of Met. I was so sick for three months I thought I was gonna die. I couldnt even leave my house. It was awful. Ill print out the way you are taking it and bring it up to my new doctor. He is an OB/GYN. I was referred to him by my family doctor when I requested a PCOS specialist. He however, is not that.

I'd say do some checking around on these boards for docs of look for Reproductive Endocrinologist in Fort Worth Texas by googling. Find a doc you wanna see thats close by ect whatever you are looking for and walk in with his name and all that stuff to your doc you are seeing now or your family doc whichever you prefer and tell him/her that you want to be refferred to this doc and hand him the paper. I do this all the time LOL I am paying these people and want to be happy with the doc i am seeing. Currently i am seeing just a Endo because I wanted to actually treat pcos and the doc i am seeing also has pcos. Thats themain reason why i went to her.
But seriously thats what i would do if I were you. And ya know what if that one isn't what you are looking for then switch again. Repeat the same steps
ps. The metformin ER is my fave! I take 2500mg's of this stuff. 5pills right @ bedtime. Sticks with me all day when i wake up The doc r/x'ed me that because i was taking the regular met 2000mg's @ bedtime but the ER will slowly release vs the other stuff wasnt doing anything for me. The side effects are alot less on ER too. Give it a shot if ya can

Well no wonder you were so sick on the met before! I can not believe a Dr would start you off at 1500 mg!! I went from 500 to 1000 to 1350 (and that is where I am currently, but I got pg with 1000 in December but m/c'd because I wasn't taking my met. (I had stopped taking it in the beginning of my Dec cycle to take a break, and got pg anyway)
I like the way Allison took hers though, that would probably be much better for you.
Good Luck!

PLEASE try Met again! and try the extended release. It is much, much easier on the tummy, but you CANNOT cut the extended release. You should start with 500 mg for few weeks, then increase to 1000 mg for a few weeks, then to 1500 mg. You still might feel queasy and tired for a few months, but you should be able to function with your daily activities. You just might have to schedule more rest and sleep time and learn what foods(ice cream and lettuce for me) will make you run to the bathroom. After a few months, you should feel normal. Your body WILL adjust to it if you increase your meds gradually and give it some time.
It is soooooooooo worth it. You *might* be able to get pg on your own, but if you have to use fertility meds then the Met will make them more effective. You should also keep taking it during your entire pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
I have heard some ladies using a good reproductive endocrinoligist in Fort Worth. I would just skip an OB/GYN and go straight to an RE. Don't waste anymore time and go straight to the top of the field. You can ask around on the board for an RE in Fort Worth.
Good luck!
P.S. I went to TCU. I love Fort Worth!

Thanks to everyone who replied to my thread. I have been so frustrated with this whole thing. I will be calling my doctor tomorrow and get a new referral to a Reproductive Endocrinoligist. It is so frustrating when you have already been tested and diagnosed and then someone new retests you just to put you back at step one. I feel like I havent made ANY progress in close to two years. I cannot thank everyone enough. Without this board I wouldnt have any idea what to do.

You'll have to let us know what happens with a new Dr! I'm glad that you're willing to try the met again!

Just one more thing. Most REs have long waiting lists to get in...up to 3 months. If I were you, I would get the Met from your current doctor and start taking it so that you will be that much further ahead when you finally get in to see the RE.

I agree that trying the met. again is a good idea. Remember..drink TONS of water, eat low carb..and I lived on Immodium for the first month practically. Once I kinda got used to it, it wasn't as bad (unless I eat really badly).
However, there are other drugs out there. Two of the most common ones are Actos and Avandia (Actos also makes one that has Actos and Met. all in one pill thingy). They have not been around nearly as long and they don't have the added benefit of helping you to lose weight...but they also don't have the nasty side effects. I still think giving the met. a good try is a good idea...if you really can't handle it...then try one of these others. When on the met. make sure you take a multivitamin (with the B complex vitamins in it), omega fatty acid supplement, and milk thistle supplement. THis should help with the side effects of met too. Good luck and keep us updated.
