We hope to be covered at least part way but I was just interested in what your guys cost was using this...she wants me to start out on clomid then if that doesn't work (3 rounds) she wants to head straight to Femara...just wondering...trying to prepare and save up as much as we can before starting these stupid infertility treatments!

My insurance doesn't cover Clomid, and I can get that at Costco for around $35/month. Femara IS covered (because it is used for cancer patients), and is just the co-pay, but the total cost for Femara is over $300/month.
cking...thanks for responding I was hoping for a few more :0) but do appreciate that you answered my post!

Out of pocket for me was $64 for five 2.5 mg pills. Not sure what the cost is for 5 mg pills but I'll find out in a few weeks (no big follies this round).
thanks for the heads up...I'm just so nervous even heading into this...clomid alone worked the first round I'm hoping it will work this time to...I just can't shell out loads of money...like a lot of people can't! Thanks again and GOOD LUCK!!!

Does your insurer have an online portal for checking your prescription coverage? Humana (our provider) has this thing where you login, input the prescription, and it'll give you the cost at a local pharmacy, their mail-order pharmacy program, and out-of-pocket. If you don't have something like that I'd definitely call your provider and just ask. You'll probably feel less stressed if you start saving/budgeting now for all eventualities.
Good luck with the clomid, Meg! I hope it's your magic bullet!!!!

I am starting Femara on Friday, and I paid a $30 copay for my prescription. My pills are 2.5 mg, and there were 30 pills in the bottle. I take two pills a day, days 3-7, so I guess that is a three months supply for $30. This will be my first month to take it, so I do not know if my doctor will increase the meds or not if it does not work.
Anyone know the difference between Clomid and Femara or why a doctor chooses one over the other?
I have no idea why they would choose one over the other...all I know is that if clomid doesn't work the first three rounds she's moving me to femara...who knows! :0) LOL

Clomid works by telling the estrogen receptors in your hypothalamus that your body lacks estrogen. Your body says, "Whoa! Make more!" You get an estrogen surge, follicles grow, eggs develop, and hopefully the magic happens.
Femara is an aromatase inhibitor. Basically it keeps your body from converting estrogens into androgens (a big problem for PCOS'ers.) It causes low estrogen levels so your body reacts by making more estrogen and hopefully causing your ovaries to function properly.
Femara has a super short half-life and flushes out of your system pretty quickly. Clomid, yeah, not so much. It tends to stick around in your system for weeks which is why back to back to back to back cycles can cause side effects like dry CM and poor uterine linings.
That's the difference in a nutshell.

My experience with clomid was severe mood changes (depression) and no mucus at all. Femera has been a dream...mood's been great and like, whooo, that's what CM is supposed to look like! I did have hot flashes and headache like with the clomid, which makes sense. My follicles did not mature very quickly and I ovulated today at CD20. My doc still thinks that's a problem especially since my lining is thin.
But anyway, since Femera is so short acting, any side effects you have will go away quickly. I don't think they go to Femera over clomid since it's not approved for infertility but my doc says there is a study at the NIH comparing clomid and femera in women with PCOS.
Good luck!

Aw, thanks, Meg. Honestly, when I took that pharmaceutical course I never thought I'd actually be using the info all these years later. It helps that my bff is studying for a PhD in pharmaceuticals. I'm constantly calling her, lol.

My insurance didn't cover either clomid nor the femara. I paid I thimk 9$ for the clomid ( did 6 rounds) and around 30-40$( can't remember exactly but it did'nt break the bank.... did one round) for the femara.
I wish you luck!!!

I take 2.5mg on femera (1 pill) on cd 3-7. So I only get five pills at a time and my insurance does cover it so I only pay a $30 copay. Which is not bad because I was expecting a lot more. Good Luck!
