What is the best medicine to fight toenail fungus?
When I went to the doc today I asked about Lamisil tablets...he said "well, that would be most effective but of course insurance won't cover a dime of it, so treatment would be $700 for 3 months usuage." I died...ok so what else is there? He said "I have a sample but it is not so good..it costs $60 a month. Gosh...so I am going to my reg. doc tomorrow to see what she suggests.
I have had this on both big toes forever and now I wan to do something about it. Anyone else have any suggestions as to what to do?

There is a product called "Loceryl" which is very effective in fighting a toe nail fungus. It is like nail polish and you apply it 1 - 2 times a week. I know that in Europe you can only get it with a doc's prescription, but that might not be the case in the States. I think one bottle is about 100 $.

I agree with the bleach and water. Sounds crazy but it works. I had used a very expensive topical called Penlac. It wasn't until I put my fingers in a bowl of bleach that the fungus actually died. Also keep cutting back your nails. I only put my fingers in bleach for a few moments and on only one occasion. Hope this helps.

I've tried Lamisil a couple of times a few years ago and while the disgusting fungus did clear up it soon came back with a vengeance! I think I'd be able to get it again on prescription but I don't really like the idea of taking while TTC. So don't feel you're missing out by not being able to get it!
I'm going to try the bleach and water though, I'd never heard of doing that. My gran swears by bleach for everything so she'll be glad to hear of another use for it.

white vinegar and water *says the manicurist* you minght also try a product called fungoff if there is any way to get this liquid into the fungus... sometimes you can get it under the toenail sometimes not.
The oral medications are all expensive and most insurance plans will not cover them. They are also risky and you need to have testing done on your liver prior to taking the meds and during therapy. The topicals can work but you may not notice a difference because it can take months for your nails to grow out. If you live somewhere where you can get a pharmacist to do a compound for you, (you would also need a prescription), try a fluconazole/DMSO solution. This is painted on a few times a week for several months. Good luck! Jen

I've had the same problem with both big toe nails for about 3 years now.
I've tried the Loceryl paint on stuff. I was told to use it everyday and it was such a pain that I just didn't bother doing it after a while, especially after finding out that it can take a year to work.
Then my doctor put me on Lamisil. I had about 6 months of that before it worked but is more convenient in a tablet form. Unfortunately about a week ago I noticed that my toenails were smelly and flaking apart again. More Lamisil for me when I go to GP tomorrow. Thank God for subsidised prescriptions in the UK.

God this is so gross - I'm sorry before I type it - but I just have to tell you guys - I swear my aunt and I were talking about her toenail fungus tonight. Her doctor gave her a script that didn't work - she is waiting for the cultures to come back. The lady at pharmacy said she had a toenail fungus once. Her doctor told her to pee on the infected toe. She swears it worked. Absolutely gross - my aunt says she's not that desparate yet. I supose it's something about the ammonia maybe - I don't really know.

i started taking lamisil last january i had fungus on my big toe too!!! so did my mom but she had liver problems and her dr was skeptical about putting her on it at first but she did fine... its been a year and a half and i dont have any more fungus and either does my mom... i did have the same problem tho that my insurance wouldnt cover it... but i am a college student with no money.... so i called my ins company and they told me that they can issue a preauthorization for 90 pills BUT you have to get the rx in the period they say... like say ur 1st perscription is on 08/01... u would have to get ur 2nd by or on 9/01... and third by or on 10/01... they are very strict about pre-auth... and it has to be approved by dr and ins... check back with ur doc... i have not had any problems after taking lamisil it is sooooo worth the wait and the nasty medication (it dissolves in ur mouth) yuuuuukkk!!! okay i hope this helps... btw im new but i know about this so i posted ... tc...
