MaLee---

When I first got my computer I was surfing the net and I came across an interesting topic called

Urine Therapy

Urine is a facinating substance that is well researched.

Urine contains antibodies that your own body is creating to fight off any infection there may be in your body and

when reconsumed orally actually acts like a vaccine in your system.

I read where a man cured himself of tuberculosis before the use of antibiotics by reconsuming his own urine.

Even some have interpretted parts of the Bible as meaning consuming ones own urine--somewhere the Bible must read-drink water from your own well....

A very interesting topic...

anyway--since other medications cost sooo much--how can it really hurt to pee in a cup, pour a little on a bandaid, wrap your toe and go to bed--see what happens after a few days--I mean after all it is totally natural, has no side effects and is free.

If any of you look up Urine Therapy on a search engine you will be amazed what you find there. I think I originally found it on Yahoo.

I was just at my Dr today for toenail fungus!
She prescribed me Spornox. You take it as follows:
2 pills in the AM - 2 pills in the PM
for one week then off 3 weeks
you do this for 3 months.
I have been on this before and my toenail cleared up, but then returned about 6 months later. She said this time, we would use that stuff you brush on your toenail for 2 months after the Spornox.

ok lord, can't believe i'm putting this here.

My pinky toe has become thick and opaque. The skin around the toe and left part of foot is flaking and peeling. It hurts sometimes.

Is this an infected fungus toe? or is this something else?

I have a completely different toenail now, its thick and gross.

thanks for any input.

Default Tea tree oil!

Tea tree oil (available at wal*mart, and any health food store) is anti fungal.

You take 4-5 drops in warm water, and soak your foot. It also gets rid of athletes foot.

Use a nail file to scrape the infected nail first (be sure not to use it again!) to allow the surface to become pourous.

It works like a charm in a few weeks!
Best of luck!

Default Dr. Andrew Weil

Today's Question
I've tried tea tree oil to get rid of toenail fungus I've had for 15 years, and it hasn't worked. What else could you recommend, and is there a safe conventional treatment available?

-- Kate

Today's Answer
(Published 12/21/2001)
Toenail fungus is a pesky and sometimes embarrassing problem that occasionally can become painful, sometimes so painful that it becomes difficult to walk. The problem is an infection called onychomycosis that affects the bed and plate underlying the nail. It’s usually caused by fungi called dermophytes that live off the protein in the nail, and at least 5 percent of the population has the infection. You can pick up the infection easily when walking barefoot in damp public areas like swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers. People with chronic diseases such as diabetes or immune-deficiency conditions are especially vulnerable, as are those with a history of athlete’s foot or those prone to excessive perspiration.

Tea tree oil — a natural disinfectant sold at health food stores — usually does work, but you've got to be patient: Paint it on the affected nails twice a day for at least two months. The nail has to grow out for the fungus to be eradicated, so it may take up to a year to see results. You also could try grapefruit seed extract, which you use in the same way as tea tree oil: Apply twice a day for at least two months.

As for conventional treatments, oral antifungal drugs seem to be effective in most cases but pose the risk of potentially fatal liver problems. While this has occurred only in rare cases, I see no reason to take even a very small risk for a problem that usually is cosmetic. In addition to these new prescription drugs, podiatrists sometimes perform surgery to temporarily remove infected nails so that a topical antifungal medication can be applied directly to the nail bed. In painful cases, a chronically infected nail can be permanently removed.

Besides treatment, be sure to take these precautions to prevent recurrences:

Keep your feet as clean and dry as possible.
Wear waterproof sandals at swimming pools or other wet public areas.
Change your socks or hosiery daily.
Clip toenails straight across — nails should not extend beyond the tips of the toes.
Avoid tight hosiery, which promotes moisture retention; wear synthetic fabric socks that "wick" moisture away from feet better than cotton or wool.

Default Best Toenail Fungus Cure

I had disgusting toenail fungus over 35 years. I think I got it during the Vietnam war where I served three tours of duty. Having to wear combat boots and especially during the monsoon rain season, our feet were never allowed to dry.
I can't tell you how much I missed never feeling comfortable being barefoot in sight of others these past many years. I asked my doctor about a year ago for help--this hopefully will help others with this problem! Lamisil is now sold in generic form! I think it is called Terbinafin. A prescription without insurance is only about 10 dollars. You do have to take liver function tests before and during treatment, to make sure the medicine is not toxic to your liver. I noticed a change, but after the initial 6 month period, we switched to generic Penlac nail liquor. I think it is called Ciclopirox. I have experienced fantastic results! I think the Terbinafin has killled the nail fungus where it lives, undernear the actual toenail. The Ciclopirox works from the outside in, so you are attacking the fungus from both inside and out! The Ciclopirox will also give a slight sheen during the treatment and your toes will look nice. Read the directions on the Ciclopirox as you have to remove it with alchohol at times, sand your nails at times, let them go a day, then again start the daily application. I feel I am about 99% cured but will ask to complete one more period of the Terbinafin to make sure the fungus is gone. Note: I don't know how much the liver function tests cost--that may be more the the medicine! Good Luck! Dave
