I live in a small town so I have no choice but to continue seeing my current doctor who refused to put me on progesterone or even test my p4 level during my pg. Yesterday it was confirmed that I had a chemical pg, is there any blood work I should request or tests that should be done? I've read that chemical pg are very common but is their anything I can do different to help prevent another from happening. Should I demand being put on prog after I O? I just want to make sure that I've done all I can do in order to prevent this from ever happening again. It seem that tests are never done until someone has 2-3 mc and I don't want to "wait and see what happens". I know I'm rambling, any suggestions? I feel like I have an incompetent doctor who knows nothing about PCOS and the risks involved.

I think that's bull! If there's a second line there's a baby, no matter if it implanted or not.
Unfortunately you really can't do much to avoid it, it's just a quirky thing your body does for one reason or another, doctors are not even sure if progesterone helps since there is no implantation, but better safe than sorry. Maybe there's no implantation because the progesterone is low!
It's true that they are very common, although you really couldn't measure the amount of times it happens because most women don't even know they are PG. It's only due to the simple fact that most of us cysters are trying to get PG and are getting tested earlier that so many of us actually know. It's unfortunate that some many of us have to have repeated losses before doctors will do testing, in my opinion even one loss is one loss too many!
My advise would be to test as early as possible next time and as soon as you get that second line go to the doctors, if you tell them your history they should see you right away. Then have them do a progesterone level when they do the HCG. My doc treats anything below 14 with suppliments. I find that sometimes you have to insist, insist, insist!!!! It's your body and your baby after all, and after all the insistance if he still says no, buy it OTC and use it anyway, it can't hurt.
As for right now there's really no blood work that will tell you why you had a chem PG.
Sorry about your loss and lots of luck and baby dust for next time! |

Repeated chemical pregnancies can be a sign of something wrong - in my case, I had 2 confirmed and 1 suspected chemical pregnancy in a 3-month time frame and that was after a missed m/c (where heartbeat had been seen at 7 weeks) at 10 weeks. I tested positive for antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, which is believed to totally inhibit implantation in many cases. So don't let any doc tell you there is no such thing as a chemical PG!
Here is what my RE tested me for after my 3rd confirmed pregnancy loss: http://www.haveababy.com/rpl/basics.asp (read the section called "Diagnosis") - but read all the sections - it's a very informative site.
Normally I turn my signature off on the PG Loss board, but I'm leaving it on here, just to let you know there is hope, even after loss. Hope that's OK with everyone here. If not, just PM me and I'll turn it off.

Meghan, I am definitely going to take all this information you have provided for me and hand it to my doctor tomorrow. I am relieved to see there are actual tests that can be performed in case I have another chemical pg, thank you!
I'm not sure there was any additional monitoring my doctor could have done? I had my beta drawn at 10dpo (hcg only @ 8) and a vaginal u/s and again at 12dpo (went down to 5.) What else could or should have been done?
Thank you so much, ladies like you give me so much hope and inspiration!

| Probably not much - but he/she should have checked your progesterone. I feel strongly about that! |
