Default What bloodtests should I ask for?

Hi all!

I finally got an appointment at my local doctors office, after being told by the specialists I contacted about wanting to test for PCOS that they don't have any time for new patiens until the fall (sigh).

I can safely say that my local doctor will know 0% about PCOS, I'm just going there for the bloodworks, and then they can remit (actual word?) me to another specialist, who reqires that you have been sent from another doctor before you can see them.

So I will have to tell them what to test my blood for, and as I have understood it I should test for total and free testosterone and DHEAS?
Should I also require that they test for androstenedione?

I don't have irregular periods (though recently it just jumped a week ahead of time and now I have it those dys instead), I do however have severe pain, cramps, bowel problems etc during my periods, but that doesn't seem to be connected to PCOS from what I have gathered reading up on the subject on the internet? I bleed and hurt a lot the first two days every time, then it calms down.
I have no idea if I ovulate or not, how do you know? (I have never been on any birthcontrol pills since they scare me with all their side effects.)

My main issue is HAIR (lots of it, and everywhere), oily skin, greasy hair, thinning scalp hair, acne (not severe but far more than normal almost-28 year olds have) on both face, chest and neck. So I'm guessing my testosterone levels are the main focus. I am actually really panicking about this, especially my scalp hair thinning. It seems to have gotten worse during the last year, the fact that it's speeding up is terrifying me.

I have problems with my weight, and most of it is gathered around my tummy. I live on 470 kcal/day (VLCD-diet) for most parts of the year, and I exercise 2-4 hours a day, 5-7 days a week. I am not as thin as you'd think a person living like that would be, and that has puzzled me greatly since it really doesn't seem reasonable that I don't lose more weight and inches than I do).
I am not what people would call fat, but if I didn't keep this diet and lifestyle, I would be. I gain weight by looking at food, especially bread... If I don't exercise and eat normally, though VERY healthy, I gain weight no matter what. I always say that I can gain weight from cucumbers, it certainly feels that way sometimes.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, I'm just wondering if there is anything weight-related they can test my blood for aswell, or if I have to do a GTT-test for that one? That will, if the doc thinks it's necessary, most likely be done at the specialist and not at my local docs office.

This is a jungle, and it doesn't get better by knowing that a lot of docs don't even know the condition. I just hope this other specialist is good at these types of disorders. I wanted to go to the first one since I saw that people with PCOS were recommending them.

Hope I didn't take up too much of your time *blush*.

Best wishes.

You might want to talk to a doctor about the VCLD you're following. Here in the states experts don't advise following that type of plan without being under medical supervision.
