Commonly if you show signs of IR you are a candidate for met, but lots of ladies with "normal" glucose labs are still put on met.
A study I read recently indicated that hyperandrogenemia and anovulation were the two criteria, and ladies had success (Those were my two primary complaints, so in my case, it would prove true). So if you have irregular or absent menses along with elevated male hormones or excess hair growth, you may well benefit from metformin therapy.
