Hi girls

Ok - long story short, I had a stupid doctor that wasn't treating me the way I needed to be treated. She did diagnose me with PCOS, but without any testing; and she was medicating me with Metformin but wouldn't care if I told her it wasn't helping. SO - I switched doctors. I had an appointment this afternoon with the new family doctor, and she referred me to a gynecologist - I have an appointment with her on Monday, May 19th at 1pm.

Basically, I'm pretty much starting over. I haven't been medicated for PCOS for about six months now, and I'm starting fresh.

My question is, when a doctor is doing this RIGHT, what can I expect when I go in on Monday? What tests might she do? I am really nervous - I'm finally taking my health into my own hands and I'm becoming serious about it (after learning the hard way that I have no familial support :'( ) - but I'm also scared outta my mind. I do have all the classic symptoms of PCOS - and I'm worried because I've had constant pelvic pain for about three weeks now (gets worse during sex). Now that I've become more serious about it, I'm reading up on it and learning a lot - and what I'm reading is scaring me.

I just want to know what I can expect when I see the doctor on Monday, and I just need some reassurance that this isn't as bad or scary as it sounds

I wish I knew, I have a follow up appointment in June. That is the same question I would like to know. I am not sure what questions to ask or if I should fast.

I think because each woman is different, it's going to take both the dr and you to get 'this right'. What works for one woman, isn't going to necessarily work for you, so you have to be the type of person that says 'Hey, I think this isn't working, maybe we should do this, or I would really like to try this'. You need a dr who is open to this kind of communication. And you need to be able to speak up and express your thoughts and ideas on your treatment.

It's hard to say exactly what to expect, but I would imagine that she might do some basic blood tests, order a fasting glucose test, and with the pain your experiencing, a pelvic exam and/or ultrasound.

I think the best kind of Dr is one who will sit down and talk to you about what is going on and answer all of your questions without making you feel rushed. My Dr is great about that.

I only started seeing her in March becuase we just moved into this area.
When I went in for my first appt I saw the Nurse Midwife. I really like her! She said she thought it was PCOS from just my symptoms but sent me for bloodwork. A TON Of different tests. I did have to fast, but I didn't do the glucose test (where you drink the nasty stuff) she also had me make an appt. to have a pelvic u/s. I had both done then made an appt. to go in for the results. I then met w/ the DR who took 30-45 minutes to explain everything to do and what we were going to do. TOmorrow I am having a hysteroscopy, D&C and Lapraoscopy.

I'd been complaining to my PCP for two years about inability to lose weight, funky periods, mood swings, appetite overdrive, body hair, etc. Finally, I went to a wonderful gyno who pretty much diagnosed me in 3 minutes. Of course, I had to have all the lovely tests to confirm.

I had all the fun fasting glucose bloodwork, plus bloodwork for my androgen levels and a host of other things. After all that came back I was sent for an ultrasound. That all confirmed my PCOS. I was then put on a VERY low dose of Met and slowly worked up (still working up due to GI symptoms). My doc also put me on BCP's at the time to help lower androgens, but I had to come off them due to a blood clot.

I'm going on Monday the 19th to a doc who is supposed to help me deal with PCOS and clotting issues...I'm traveling 300 miles to see him, so I hope he helps.

Just make sure you advocate for yourself, read, read, read, and keep copies of all your medical records for your own research. Ask questions 'till you are blue in the face. If the doc hurries you or brushes you off, be assertive, then find a new doc if you aren't comfortable. Good luck! You've got a whole lot of support in your corner!

Just to say good luck with the doctor.
I always knew I had PCOS mainly because of the excess hair thing, and difficulty in losing weight. I had excruciating pain but that turned out to be endometriosis. Anyway! I would advise you write down every question you can think of (that's what I did) as I seem to forget to ask this and that.
I would imagine you will get an ultrasound but a doctor can diagnose from just asking a few of the obvious PCOS questions, ie how regular are your cycles, do you easily put on weight and where does the weight go, for most PCOS sufferers its mid section. I really only had all the answers that I already knew when I went down the fertility route as they really scan and test your blood. I have lots of tiny cysts on both ovaries, raised androgens etc.
Ask as many questions as you like as Believe me they are been well paid for it.

Okay, so update for anyone interested...

I went to my new gynecologist today. She confirmed that I do have PCOS. Said that I'm on the verge of getting my period - since I took the pill for three months and just went off of it in April, she said that since I JUST went off it, my cycle is still normal and is preparing for a period already. (Last period was April 16). So she told me to start taking the birth control Yasmin again and renewed my prescription for a year. Had my first pap smear done, ickkkkk lol. So now I play the waiting game some more and wait for my period to come to start taking the pill.

I kinda feel defective now that she told me that having kids will be difficult when I'm ready...did anyone else feel like this? I know I'll get over it, I'm just super emotional right now after having my fear confirmed. At least I know it's not impossible to have kids, it just sucks to know that I'll have a hard time trying to conceive.

So, I am now officially a cyster, lol. I've been inspired and my diet and workout plan starts today. I need to be healthy!

I can't offer any advice on TTC. I only have one kid, and he came along at a very unexpected time. I was 19, not planning and not ready. But at that time, weight wasn't an issue. I was 120 lbs and 5'4". When I was ready to finally settle down with a man, I was 24 and he was 39. Having 4 kids of his own already, he was 'snipped'. And honestly, the thought of another never entered my mind. I probably wouldn't have had any if it wasn't for the 'accident'.

Good luck with the dieting and exercise! I'm in the same boat with you right now. Just starting up again, and hoping that I don't have any more problems come up that distract from the PCOS.

Hi Layla,

Thank you for the update and feeling that you can open up to us. I know how you feel. I knew my doctor was going to confirm it, but I was still hoping that it was just weight gain. The diagnosis was bitter/sweet.

Getting pregnant is different for every women. Even the healthiest woman have a hard time getting pregnant. It is all about getting healthy, the healthier the better.

Keep coming back, I can't wait to see you on soulcysters again.

I'm proud of you for not giving up on your health just because of a bad doctor! That is really difficult. The first doc I went to about it completely blew me off. I was looking to start a family at that time, and that crackhead gave me three cycles worth of Clomid and said, "call me when you get pregnant."

It's a bit scary being diagnosed, but you're much better off knowing now, BEFORE it's time to start on kids. That way you can be informed from the start and not go through what a lot of women go through, that is trying for months with no idea anything is wrong.
