Dear Sarah,
I'm not in high school anymore, but I was jealous when I read your schedule - it's probably a lot of work right now, but your classes sound like so much fun! Especially pottery: I've always wanted to take a pottery class.
Anyway, I wanted to respond to talk to you about social work. I went back and forth between social work, special ed, and speech pathology for a long time before I finally settled on social work. I start graduate school in the fall and am just two years away from my MSW (master's in social work). I'm excited!
About what social workers do: everything! From what I've found out, a social work degree can set you up to do just about any sort of helping job. I'm focusing on working with the mentally handicapped population and Spanish-speakers...I want to make sure they get the services they are entitled to by the state. I also want to work with adoptions - I think adoption is a miracle!
I do respite care now, too. I do in-home therapy with a four-year-old girl who has autism. It's an extremely challenging job, but I really love it and it's a GREAT part-time job while in college. Great experience for social work OR special ed, too.
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I think you have a ton of great opportunities ahead of you when you head off to college, as long as you stick with it. I think you would be an excellent social worker or special ed teachers, because you seem so compassionate and patient!
Best of luck as you figure it all out and if you ever have any questions about social work, let me know - I'd be glad to share what knowledge I have!

, Jennifer
