Question What constitutes a proper test?

I went to my doctor to get tested for diabetes because I am insulin resistant and have some of the symptoms of diabetes. However he insisted my sugar levels were normal by pricking my finger and placing a drop of blood on a piece of paper that changed colour according to how much sugar is in the blood. Should I not have had a fasting test or at the very least a proper blood test? Also, he didnt even ask what I had eaten and when...does this sound like a good enough test?
