Default What day are you supposed to start BCP's on?

I was planning on getting a prescription for birth control pills but then went camping and forgot! I want them for birth control because I am having regular cycles on Metformin and I REALLY don't want any more kids. Also since my 3rd child I have really, really heavy and painful periods. Anyways my period just started today (and MAJOR cramps!) and I all of a sudden realized that I don't know what day you are supposed to start them. Is is the first day of your period? If that is the case I need to go get a prescription today. And I still haven't decided which kind I want to try but I guess I can just wing it. Thanks for any help!

I tried googling it for you and it seems like the general consensus is you can start within the first 24 hours of AF (so, the first day) or the first Sunday when/after you get AF. If you choose to start after the first day of AF, you need to use a back-up method of protection for a while (some say a week, some say up to a month).

Most BCP's say to start the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period starts.

I take Yasmin and it works great for me. My periods are a breeze after starting. I used to get really heavy periods with major cramping. Now my period last about 3 days and it is super easy.

I've been on BCP since 99 and have always started the Sunday after I started AF. It all depends on you in terms of what BCP works the best. I had GREAT results on tri-levlen 28. I recently was on Yasmin with DRSP (before the new Yaz pill came out) and was not at all happy with it. Now I'm on ortho-tricyclene and things are pretty good. Tri-levlen was my favorite. Good luck!!!

tmz,

I loved Trilevlin too! I was on it before I had my daughter, and did quite well on it.

I'm going on Ortho Cyclen tomorrow because I was just diagnosed with PCOS and found out that Trilevlin is really high in androgens (something I don't need anymore of LOL). Too funny that Trilevlin worked great for me, but was about the worst thing for me. I give up trying to understand my hormones sometimes.

I have Nuvaring and like it pretty well. It produces the lowest estrogen blood levels of any combination birth control currently available in the USA. All the "old" pills (not Yaz-family) made me crazy and acne. I just shove the Ring in and forget it for 3 weeks. My directions were to start the first day of AF or else I would use condomns for a week.

I'm not sure it's helped the heavy bleeding or cramping though. We'll see.
