Unhappy What do you recommend for anxiety issues??

I have an appointment with my doctor for meds next week. I have been fighting anxiety and I just can't do it anymore. I feel like it is ruling my life. I can't go to things anymore. I had to walk out of my kids Christmas program at school last week. I just get really hot and I feel like I can't breathe. I get light headed and feel like I am going to pass out. I am tired of fighting this. I want to feel normal again. I find that at times it is worse than others.

I was on Zoloft about 5 years ago, but I hated the sexual side effects. What can you recommend. My husband thinks I need to take more time for myself and I will be fine. I wonder if it is better to take something everyday or something as needed?

Thanks

My recommendation (as someone who has been cured of anxiety!): Find a good therapist who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). You can do this either in conjunction with or separate from taking new anti-anxiety medication. CBT works on stopping the body's physical response to anxiety so your rational mind can take back control. CBT has the same success rate as drugs and is of finite duration. After stopping CBT (after completing it) more people remain anxiety-free than after stopping medication.

CBT generally starts with breathing techniques (that you have to practice) to help control your anxiety, then moves on to muscle relaxation, turning negative thoughts into positive, and so on. The program I did lasted a few months, 1x a week, and I graduated early after only a couple of months because I responded so well to the early therapy. Now I'm one of the calmest people I know-- it really has changed my life for the better.

Books on the subject: The Feeling Good Handbook (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/045...books&v=glance) , Mind Over Mood (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/089...ooks&v=glance), and Thoughts and Feelings (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/157...books&v=glance)

Nicole,
Thank you for taking the time to respond! I just ordered the book from Amazon. I feel like my anxiety is getting worse and it is ruling my life.

Rosie-There are some anti-depressants out there that are also used that combat against anxiety. I don't have any of those side effects on effexor. There are a few others that combat both. Anyway there are also drugs that don't have the side effects you are worried about. I've also been on zoloft and didn't like it for that reason. Anyway talk to your dr as well.

If you don't want to go the drug route I've heard that acupuncture can work wonders.

I am personally on Lexapro (escalitopram) which I find very good for reducing anxiety.

But there are also management techniques and things you can do with/without the medication to help. I find Bach Flower "Rescue Remedy" is AMAZING for knocking a panic attack on the head. It comes in a spray or drops and just a little bit is so helpful when you're feeling anxious.

Deep breathing helps me too. I just find a quiet spot (even if it's the loo at work!) and sit and breathe deeply for a few minutes. It helps a lot to just take the anxiety fog from before your eyes.

Hope this helps!

I also wonder if I take any anti-depression pills while I have been taking clomid and metmorfin? do they effect the baby if I get pregnant?

Molbiygen - you can take some anti-depressants while pregnant, but you need to check with your doctor which ones are ok. Always best to get medical advice there.

I can understand that worry, that's for sure. But you definitely need to check your medications or you may harm a baby when you conceive (and do you know what, I can feel it in my bones that you're going to have a baby - it just has to be the right time honey.) It's better to be safe than sorry isn't it?

Big hugs - it sounds like you need them!

Wellbutrin XL is what I take. I was taking another med but a yr ago when we started to ttc my dr switched me because it was safe for prg and nusing if that time ever came. I also noticed my sex drive return when I started to take it. Hope that helps.

Jodi,
I have wellbutrin XL as well. I am going to start taking it today, but I am kind of nervous what to expect. I am taking 100mg x 2 a day. My doctor told me to take my doses at least 6 hours a part. Did you notice anything when you started taking it?? I told my DH to call and check on me today.

The funny thing it that since I have gone to the doctor to talk about my anxiety issues I am feeling better.

I take zoloft 50mg for anxiety/depression and I'm TTC. My doc told me it is fine during pregnancy... probably better for the baby than a mother who is panicking all of the time.
