I tell then it's an endocrine disorder, kind of in the same family as diabetes. Short and sweet.

yep, I usually just tell people that it's pre-diabetes....that I have a problem with insulin. Most people can understand that.

Hey, that's a good question! I usually have no idea what to say, besides going way too indepth. So what would one say if they weren't IR?

If I'm just in casual conversation, I'd still say the same thing...

Maybe, I'd qualifiy it with a "Generally speaking...it's an endocrine disorder, blah, blah, blah..."

When I got a diagnosis about 3 years ago I started telling close family members it was pre-diabetes and explained a little about IR. As time has gone on I've added more things here and there I think their starting to get a hold of the "whole" syndrome with my subtle hints over the years.

See I was't sure if I should tell them it is a disease, sydrome or a blood disorder?? Not to be dumb but a blood disorder would be them same as a endocrine disorder? I never thought about saying pre-diabetes. I still get confused on the whole IR thing, test show I am not but I thought everyone with PCOS is some what IR??

About 50% to 70% of all women with PCOS have some degree of insulin resistance, or insulin insensitivity, and research has shown that insulin resistance probably contributes to the hyperandrogenism that is responsible for the symptoms of PCOS. The precise incidence of the syndrome, however, is probably dependent on how the syndrome is defined and the method used to detect and quantify insulin resistance.

In all honesty, what I usually say is that my ovaries & insulin are a bit buggered. I have to say it in a light-hearted way as I'm a jokey sorta person so if I went into a more serious mode and started spouting facts they would think something was really wrong lol.

I'm glad you asked this question....I wonder about that too. I never know what to say without going into way too much detail. I don't know if I'm IR, so I don't know if I should be saying "pre-diabetes" plus everyone knows how much I have always wanted children so they are always asking me why we don't have children yet. I don't know why I seem to have so much trouble understanding PCOS. How am I suppose to educate people on it if I can't seem to figure it out for myself?! UGH! Sorry to hijack!

I tell them that an insulin resistance causes a hormone imbalance which causes cysts on my ovaries... Then I explain that the cysts aren't "like tumors" but bumps from eggs that never matured.
